North Philadelphia meeting addresses gentrification (White people destroying neighborhoods)
Philadelphia Daily News ^ | 03/03/2014 | VALERIE RUSS

PEOPLE FROM all over Philadelphia came together Saturday to tell their stories about gentrification at the Church of the Advocate in North Philadelphia.

Organizers had issued fliers calling for an "emergency town hall" to confront a "crisis facing black Philadelphia: the demise of our neighborhoods."

In gentrification, some neighborhoods are targeted for revitalization - but the new development leads to huge rent or property-tax increases that often force longtime residents out.

***In gentrification, some neighborhoods are targeted for revitalization**

Is this a way to describe non-government urban renewal, where private citizens use their own funds to upgrade a slum?

We can't have Whites moving into black neighborhoods. Blacks will have to move.

Why is it okay for blacks to move into white neighborhoods, but white can't do the same? Isn't that racism?

The only whites willing to move into bad neighborhoods are liberal whites, gay whites who like cities. Now they are clashing with blacks. Wonderful, Dem whites fighting with Dem blacks. Same thing is happening in Oakland CA. Rich liberal high tech white workers seeking lower rent moved into Oakland and commute to Silicon Valley (homes own by CEO, entrepreneurs etc, prices out of reach for most well paid IT workers). Google provides coach buses for commute and they top at city Metro Stops reserved for city buses. Normal people will get ticketed if they stop at a Metro Stop to pickup people, but Google’s offense is overlooked. This double standard has become the rallying issue for poor Dems in Oakland against the pro Dem Silicon Valley corporations. Let them fight. Dem party is going have to choose sides, and whoever they choose, the losing side will sit out of the election or look at the GOP as an alternative. Either way the GOP gains. MSM highlights the war between RINO and Tea Party, but the split between rich white liberal Dems and the poor Dems is even worst and heated. No Tea Party or RINO slash each others tires or spray paint their opponents home. If the economy does not pick up the conflict will escalate and become more heated.

Time to bring back “redlining” and “blockbusting”...to get rid of those evil interlopers.

Definitely need a score card.

Let me see if I have this straight.

Once upon a time cities were made up of neighborhoods. The people tending to settle in the neighborhoods were of like ethnicity, religion etc.
Common sense just told ‘us’ that though it may be ‘safe’ to wander into ‘other’ neighborhoods, it wasn’t a good idea to start any trouble.
This worked well for quite a few years but come WWII the younger set came home from the War and settled in the suburbs. For the most part the neighborhoods ‘changed’ and the suburbs weren’t quite as demanding as to the ethnicity of them.
Along came LBJ and it was deemed, through the ‘Great Society’ that neighborhoods should be integrated.

Whites living in older neighborhoods were retiring and houses were being snatched up by minorities, with after a few ‘families’ moving in the price of the property started to drop.

So, in the wisdom of LIBS forever, LBJ managed to turn cities into ghetto neighborhoods.

When the ‘working’ or Blacks that had money started to move out because of the conditions, for the most part the cities were uninhabitable.

The “YUPPY” movement started and the beautification of the cities began, starting with tearing down the old hotels and flop houses in the cities - which is where the NOW homeless population were living.

This forced the inner city blacks to be jammed into tighter corners and ‘the powers that be’ started demanding ‘affordable housing’ (A code word if ever there was one) in the suburbs.

Along with the beautification of the cities came the aforementioned Yuppies who were buying boarded up houses started ‘moving in to the neighborhoods’, prices went up and now the abandoned POOR Blacks were moved into tighter corners and the Fed kept pumping them money.

Now, predictably, the Blacks are rebelling that Whites moving into THEIR neighborhoods (FUNNY, WE CAN’T HAVE WHITE NEIGHBORHOODS) so they are going to court over it.

The inmates are definitely running the asylum.

IN essence, the Whites are being denied the neighborhoods THEIR ancestors built and through the process of ‘change’ lost.

Now THEY want to pass laws forbidding Whites AND stores they deem are WHITE STORES - Trader Joes etal - can’t come into the neighborhood because MONEY will come back to it.

A similar situation is in the Indian Community.
“WE” sent enough of them to college and a few actually learned something - that Indians could have their own laws on their ‘given’ land.

The same Lawyers etal figured a way to put Casinos on them in the guise of ‘helping’ the masses...Well guess it doesn’t take a genius to figure out who has the money..

One of the great lines from Washington was

“Whose brilliant idea was it to send ‘them’ to law school and teaching them how to read”....well, maybe not but....

Governments though, should not take property through eminent domain, then turn around and sell the property to private sector developers.

My father (son of Italian immigrants) was from Germantown. My mother,
also a child of Italian immigrants, lived on Mercy street in South Philly,
just down the block from Joey Bishop.

crisis facing black Philadelphia: the demise of our neighborhoods.

Almost all those neighborhoods used to be White. When Whites complained about the demise of their neighborhoods they were called racists. If they dared do anything about it the whole power structure line up against them.

We lived in Germantown until 1955, when things began to change.

I went to college just off of 6900 Germantown Ave. in the mid-70s, which was right on the Mt. Airy side of Germantown; it wasn't a bad neighborhood at that time, but I haven't lived in the Philadelphia area since '79, so I'm sure it's gone through a few changes since then--even the college is gone.

My Grandma was from Germantown. When we went there to visit my Great-Grandma there weren’t very many Germans around. They could have renamed it Zululand. It was just as dark and just as hostile. This was thirty years ago.

"Vine to South and River to River."

I've heard about this; my sister has been at 15th and Locust for almost 35 years now, in the same high rise, and I have a few colleagues in my online work who have been moving in to places south of Pine and just in from the Schuylkill, not only people at Penn or Drexel either. I might get lost in the old neighborhoods for all the new construction over the years.

I left in 1975...lived 30 miles North of Philly. I was a transplant who eventually came home to SE USA. Things weren’t good then, even in the outlying /towns and cities.
