Embattled IRS official Lois Lerner’s husband’s law firm has strong Obama connections

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) official who apologized for targeting conservative nonprofit groups for extra scrutiny is married to an attorney whose firm hosted a voter registration organizing event for the Obama presidential campaign, praised President Obama’s policy work, and had one of its partners appointed by Obama to a key ambassadorship.

IRS Exempt Organizations Division director Lois G. Lerner, who has been described as “apolitical” in mainstream press coverage of the IRS scandal, is married to tax attorney Michael R. Miles, a partner at the law firm Sutherland Asbill & Brennan. The firm is based in Atlanta but has a number of offices including in Washington, D.C., where Miles works.

The more government controls decisions the more legal work is involved. The more disputation there is in a society, the more lawyers are "needed." It makes perfect sense.

The firm became especially adept in this area through the work of Joseph Brennan, who became a partner in 1933. Now known as Sutherland, Tuttle & Brennan, the firm also took on many landmark pro bono matters in this era, including the landmark 1938 right-to-counsel case of Johnson v. Zerbst, one of the most oft-cited cases in the 20th century. The firm opened an office in Washington, DC in 1937, and this office grew apace after World War II when William Sutherland relocated to the city. The tandem development of the Atlanta and Washington offices gave the firm the distinction of being one of the first national law firms.
