CHICAGO A former handyman serving life in prison for the 1993 murder of seven people at a suburban Chicago restaurant has been awarded nearly a half-million dollars in a civil lawsuit in which he alleged a jail guard punched him in the face.
Victims' relatives Sunday criticized jurors' decision for James Degorski, who, with an accomplice, shot and stabbed two restaurant owners and five workers at Brown's Chicken and Pasta during a botched robbery. Their bodies were found in a walk-in cooler and freezer.
Degorski, now 41, accused a Cook County Jail guard of punching him and breaking his cheekbone and eye socket in 2002 just after Degorski's arrest in what had been one of the most notorious, unsolved murder cases in Illinois history.
"If broken bones are worth a half-million, then how much are seven lives worth? This just doesn't feel right," said Ann Ehlenfeldt, a sister of Richard Ehlenfeldt, one of the owners who was killed.
But Degorski's attorney, Jennifer Bonjean, hailed the jury's decision, which came Friday after a three-day trial.

Why is this guy even still breathing?
Exactly.
Because the guard didn’t hit him hard enough?
“Why is this guy even still breathing?”
Chicago..............need I say more?
That dirtbag lawyer is doing a happy dance.
And the families of his victims can’t even sue to take his money because the statute of limitations has expired for a civil case. I don’t think this is the kind of judicial system our founders envisioned.
1993? Why is that subhuman, murderous dirtbag even alive? He should have been executed many years ago.
Let’s see how he feels when the families of his victims sue his ass for that half million dollars...
“The first thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers.”
Wrongful death statute of limitations is generally 2 or 3 years. Sad.
I doubt he has any of it. It’s been 12 years. The lawyer got at least 40% and if he has kids, there is child support.
I am sure it will be appealed
Jury deadlocked on the death penalty. He got life without parole instead.
The family of his victims should sue him immediately for damages. Another example of the absurdity that is now the judiciary.
I wouldn’t sue for wrongful death.
I’d sue his asp for Violation of their Civil Rights.
Just like the Black Families of murdered victims did in the south did against the Klan!
“Why is that subhuman, murderous dirtbag even alive?”
May be he will use the money to get out. And shortly
afterwards, get hit by a car. On the other hand this is
just another way for the tards to spread the wealth. Those
prison guards are going to end up with some of that money.
If this was another state other than Ill-annoy, I’d say
give it to him in cash and let him sit on it in his 6x9
jail cell for the rest of his life and not be allowed to
spend a dime of it.
Figures.
“Ill-annoy”
LOL! Perfect!
#1 This guy should have met a big tall tree and short stiff rope about 48 hours after his conviction, as soon as a 36 hour repeal was denied.
#2 Every penny of this money, of these foolish juror’s decision...every penny...should go to the families of the victims. Period.
