With the ballot now set, the first poll of the official Republican primary field for U.S. Senate finds a dead heat between Thom Tillis and Greg Brannon.
Both took 14 percent in a March survey from Public Policy Polling, a Raleigh-based Democratic firm.
Its a downward shift for Tillis, who held a commanding 20 percent in the PPP poll a month ago, and puts him in the morass of an eight-candidate field despite pumping big money into a TV ad campaign.
The plurality of the GOP primary electorate remains undecided, at 36 percent.
Even with a minimal campaign, Heather Grant took third at 11 percent putting her within the margins for the lead. Former Shelby Mayor Ted Alexander and Charlotte pastor Mark Harris took 7 percent ahead of unknown Alex Bradshaw at 6 percent.
When GOP primary voters are asked about the candidates, about three-quarters are unsure what to think about them. The one candidate recognized by at least half of the voters is Tillis, the House speaker. But even then, his favorable ratings are a tick lower than his unfavorable numbers at 24-28.
Oh, and Tillis last week saying Obamacare was a "great idea" I'm sure didn't help.
North Carolina is the next primary, May 6th.
Is there a veteran available to represent NC?
Great news that Brannon is getting traction.
Rove, McConnell, McShame, Grahamnesty, etc. are deeply saddened.
Mike Lee recently endorsed Brannon....that had to help..hopefully Palin and Cruz will chime in soon..
“Is there a veteran available to represent NC?”
Greg Brannon is a doctor, and has been endorsed by Paul, Lee and conservative groups. Tillis is endorsed by McConnell and Rove.
“Tillis is endorsed by McConnell and Rove.”

That’s the kiss of death for Tillis to anyone who didn’t already know that he was the GOPe’s candidate.
Greg Brannon’s the conservative in this race.
Jury Finds Tea Party Senate Candidate Who Rand Paul Endorsed Misled Investors to the Tune of $250,000 A North Carolina court found on Tuesday that North Carolina Senate candidate Greg Brannon (R) misled two people into investing in a tech company he helped launch Read more: http://thehill.com/blogs/ballot-box/senate-races/198691-court-rules-nc-senate-candidate-brannon-misled-investors#ixzz2vgii6GKJ Follow us: @thehill on Twitter | TheHill on Facebook
Brannon was convicted and must repay one of the investors $250K + interest. this plus his idiotic comments about the 2012 election....Find an adult, quick, or it's Tillis.
“Brannon was convicted and must repay one of the investors $250K + interest. this plus his idiotic comments about the 2012 election....Find an adult, quick, or it’s Tillis.”
Brannon is appealing the Jury verdict. I think that lawsuit was an arranged and fixed sham. It popped up just at the time he tied or exceeded Tillis against Hagan, just as Matt Bevin’s TARP signature popped up just as he tied or exceeded McConnell against Grimes. And, Brannon’s partner was left unscathed on the same charge. Very fishy.
We don’t need another carefully groomed establishment guy in the US Senate.
Since he is convicted of fraud, he sounds like a fast talking crook who will drag the Tea Party's reputation through the mud on the national stage once the MSM focuses in on him.
Lose him quick or we have another Aiken problem on our hands.
And your candidate is ?
“Find an adult, quick, or it’s Tillis”
Good luck. The primary, as cotton1706 noted above, is May 6th.
Decisions, decisions. So do I go with a guy that (i) has been accused and convicted of misleading investors (which he is appealing) but is committed to the constitution, limited government, and individual responsibility, or (ii) a Mitch McConnell clone who will refuse to fight the “fundamental transformation” of our country?
Based upon the dire straits this country is in, I stand with Brannon. I don’t even care if he gets fined for not abiding by ObummerCare rules or for tearing the manufacturer’s tags off of pillows.
Who are you backing?
Think Progress endorsed the judge.
This is not an easy win. Tillis, Pat McCrory and Hagan all have low approval ratings. Doesn’t mean they wont scrape a win. The Arkansas race is an easy pickup.
Tillis and Hagan will vote the same way on fixing Obamacare and fixing immigration. When Tillis had a state house and state senate ready to pass amnesty he went full steam ahead. When Hagan did she helped filibuster amnesty. McIntyre, Shuler and Hagan show how Democrats can scrape victory.
There was all sorts of games being played in the startup company. This is going to a run-off and it will be more and more clear that Greg just lost to bunch of low information jurors.
Maybe the jurors hated the Tea Party, Republicans or hated all politicians.
Some group everyone loves endorsed Brannon so he’s the memetic favorite around here.
However I find your worries that he may lose to Hagan to be extremely legitimate.
Does NC have a run-off between the top two vote-getters or does someone win by a plurality?
Why are you and so many others acting like Brannon and Tillis are the only two running in the GOP Primary?
Doesn’t answer my question. It is amazing how few of them exist among GOP candidates.
