Obama to order expansion of overtime pay for millions of workers

Feb. 12. 2014: President Obama, surrounded by workers, signs an executive order to raise the minimum wage for federal contract workers.AP

President Obama, flexing his executive authority once again, plans to order the Labor Department to expand overtime pay requirements to include millions more workers -- in a move likely to rankle the business community.

The president plans to make the announcement on Thursday at the White House, a senior administration official confirmed to Fox News. Though the administration has claimed previous executive actions had bipartisan support, officials are acknowledging that this particular move will anger business groups and congressional Republicans.

But the announcement would appear to dovetail with Democrats' election-year strategy of focusing on income inequality and the middle class.

The New York Times, citing White House officials briefed on the announcement, first reported that Obama will direct his Labor Department to require overtime pay for millions of workers currently classified as "executive or professional" employees.

The new regulations to the 1938 Fair Labor Standards Act reportedly would mandate that businesses provide overtime pay for those who work jobs as varied as fast-food restaurant managers, loan officers, and computer technicians. Currently, businesses are prohibited from denying overtime to a salaried worker making less than $455 per week. The rules that Obama is proposing would increase that salary threshold, though it was not clear by how much.

I have personally experienced retail chains abusing salaried “managers” by expecting them to put in 60-70 hours per week.

That being said....where does Obama get off doing this with a stroke of his pen?

I would not them saying that, but you got to take into account that if they had the sense to get in out of the rain, they would not have voted for him the first time, let alone the second. And if they can be fooled one time, they can be fooled again when necessary. What is happening with them is that they are in the process of reaping the seeds they sowed on November 4, 2008 and November 6, 2012.

That you can even associate with Obama voters shows that you are a better man than I.

Sure some companies do that. There are other jobs out there.

Before I started my company I refused more than one job from companies that abused their employees. Those companies typically don’t fare well in the long run.

I’ve heard scores of former Obama supporters say they wish the’d never voted for him.

Gee, that helps. That helps a lot. Thanks, dingbats.

Not that I want to. One of them dates someone I know an no I’m not a buddy of his. Just know him. He’s a younger liberal but won’t be much longer from the looks of things.

A true communist believes that employers exploit their employees. This is just one more step toward the complete takeover of the means of production by the government.

Plenty of posters here think all employers exploit, kinda sad.

My employers are part of the team. They get above average pay, above average benefits, flexible work schedule, training, and work they enjoy. yes sometimes they are asked to work 70 hours a week. Many times its a relaxed 35.

Mandatory OT will put some of them out on the street.

How true, how true. My resume reads like a Who's Who of Chapter 11 Bankruptcy. If you'll chisel your employees, you'll cheat your suppliers.

I did not say that all employers exploit. I said that I personally worked for several former employers who did. All are out of business now.

Typically they'd hire "managers" as salaried exempt, but then set the payroll for hourly help unrealistically low. So you were supposedly "managing" when in reality all of your time was spent out on the floor with a box cutter and a broom. 60+ hours per week. Break it down per hour and it was below minimum wage.

I got smart and ditched that business a long time ago. But I have some former colleagues who no doubt are celebrating Obama's move today.

Stuart Varney on FNC this morning was very blunt about this: Obama is just trying to buy votes for the 2014 election. That’s what this is all about.

I understand that, I was young and ignorant at one time, though I was never a Liberal, I did vote Democrat. Until I got old enough to have some sense.

I was once a Democrat too. They’ve been hijacked. I cannot belong to a party with their current beliefs and stances. It goes against every good, moral, and American value. Thew new Democrats are owned by foreign puppetmasters and many of them don’t even know it.

Currently, it is around $11 an hour for managers and $27 an hour for IT employees. I would assume he is going to raise it to at least $15 to $20 an hour for managers. It is going to kill fast food and retail. IT will be a bloodbath if they have to pay programmers and engineers overtime and on-call pay.

So why have salaried employees at all?

Does this apply to the military? They are salaried and are on duty 24/7, in effect making their wage, depending on rank, les than mimimum. Furthermore, if you make less than minimum, whether piece work or salaried, your employer muat make up the difference to bring you to minimum wage level. Will this apply to the military?

Will the imposter also declare that overtime is to be paid for hours worked over 29?

“Like any good foreigner, Obama is willing to kill the economy Americans just won’t kill.”

Good foreigners come here and become legal citizens, something this imposter didn’t feel necessary.

“I have personally experienced retail chains abusing salaried “managers” by expecting them to put in 60-70 hours per week.”

That’s the difference between hourly and salaried employees.
I personally don’t see why anyone would take a salaried position, you’re just asking to be overworked.

This is idiotic.

I haven’t punched a time card in 30 years.

This idiot would have all us professionals punching time cards.

Hey, moron, we get paid the big bucks because every once in a while, we have to work late and on weekends.

I HAVE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH THIS!
