I haven't been pinging you to articles about this because there's been so much contradictory information, a lot of it from less than credible sources. This article from the WSJ is well done, and with new details. If you've been following the developments, it's worth the read.

A total flight time of five hours after departing Kuala Lumpur means the Boeing 777 could have continued for an additional distance of about 2,200 nautical miles, reaching points as far as the Indian Ocean, the border of Pakistan or even the Arabian Sea, based on the jet's cruising speed.

Don’t know.

I will know tomorrow if the airline opted out of the engine tracking system - I think if they did opt out than obviously we cannot know that it flew for 4 more hours and I’d have to think the plane crashed.

If it did fly on then we’d have to think the plane might be stolen - maybe for ransom by a small group. Seems a big country like Iran or something wouldn’t need to acquire a plane in this way.

Just all speculation at this point.

Looks like the RR EHM system does three snapshots of engine performance, takeoff/climb/cruise, and then a summary report when the plane lands.

It will also make a report if a sensor detects a problem.

Presumably a summary report was found, indicating the plane completed the flight successfully and the time? That’s all I can think of that would indicate when the plane landed.

I presume it knows when the plane lands due to the weight on wheels sensors?

I guess it is also possible that a water landing might trigger the summary report.

I dunno...?

"I think we (U.S.) know a lot more then we are letting on. While we pretend to let the Malaysia's have control, I think we're searching or know where this plane is, and if hijacked trying to not let on we know while deciding a course of action. "

Rescue in the works.. Obama's 'OBL raid #2' moment!! Approval rating skyrockets to 85%!!!! ..and the entire world takes a collective sigh of relief, thanks to the almighty 0bama! /s

Chinese Airlines already own many 777’s. They certainly don’t need to steal one to get the technology.

WSJ appears to be referring to AHM data, which is relayed on the ACRS data system, but isn’t part of the normal ACRS operation. AHM is mostly fuel consumption and CO2 emission data. See above link.

The Reuters take on the same article: http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/03/13/malaysia-airlines-usa-investigators-idUSL2N0MA07U20140313

But one has to take any article that makes a statement like the one below with a grain of salt:
“U.S. counterterrorism officials are pursuing the possibility that a pilot or someone else on board the plane may have diverted it toward an undisclosed location after intentionally turning off the jetliner’s transponders to avoid radar detection, the newspaper reported, citing one person tracking the probe.”

Really? The Nazi fighters in WW2 should have just turned off their transponders and then they would have been invisible to British & American radar!! More media inaccuracy.

The article explains the engines routinely send performance data to roll Royce as part of a maintence contract with Malaysia airlines.

I find it a little unusual that any company, large or small, would allow 20 of its employees to travel on the same plane.

Who turned off the transponder in your theory?

They said in the article, no reason to believe the crew had anything to do with it, and no reason to think terrorism was involved. Crap like this oooh so hurts my head

What, like put a nuke on it and announce that the plane is filled with human shields? then fly it into a city to hope that no one will shoot it down?

IMO...IF it is in one piece, We know where it is. We know who has it. And it will never leave the ground it’s on. All the cloak and dagger is again...IMO, hiding the ransom negotiations that ultimately allow us to claim we never paid terrorists. We get them, then destroy it.

But someone will have our money.

Oy Vey.. China would love to steal the employees more than the aircraft, but if it looks like terrorism no one suspects China. If China takes the employees after they officially land IN China then it’s all eyes on China.
