The York County Sheriff's Office released dash cam video from a traffic stop in which a deputy shot an elderly man reaching for his cane. WARNING: Video includes some graphic material and language.

Sounds like the old guy did everything wrong. I feel sorry for the cop.

According to FNC, the cop fired six shots and only hit the guy with the cane only once. He’s going to survive the shooting. What pissed me off was the cop’s “fellow officers and his chief” saying that he did the “right thing.” The lack of concern for other human beings on the part of most cops to day is criminal.
Older people sometimes don’t use very good judgment, and are not accustomed to dealing with police. They don’t deserve to be shot for making a dumb mistake. Never did I hear the cop say to stay in your vehicle, which is customary when you see the driver start to open his door.
Yeah. I guess the officer was just “standing his ground.”
The cop said "I'm sorry" about a dozen times. Obviously HE thought he did something wrong. He asked the Lord to forgive him at least a half dozen times.
The cop panicked over nothing. It was a bad shooting and he knew it.
Sorry I am not buy this one and as someone who stood gate guard duty in the military, two things are wrong here, first the old Man was clearly unstable as he got out of the truck and two the officer has the benefit of his car door protecting him from the start.
My old gun training Master Chief said it best, “You better thinking and be 100% and damn sure before you pull that trigger because, you can’t recall bullets once their are fired!”
Yeah some local LEO wannabe tried to tell me the same shit so I asked him if another cop had seen the incident and shot the cop who was shooting an unarmed man in an attempt to save the unarmed man's life would THAT Cop be in the right?
Amazingly he couldn't figure out how to answer.
I guess, to mollify all of FR’s cops, I will hold on commenting about this specific incident for now.
But, all these type incidents seem to have one common denominator. Namely, when a cop rolls up on a scene like this should he be able to open fire on a citizen based upon what he THINKS?!?!?!
I say NO!
His training, in my opinion should train him to hold fire that 1,000th of a second until he KNOWS!!!!! He gets paid to take that 1,000th of a second risk!!
If he doesn’t want to take that risk, then turn in the badge and the gun and go drive a concrete truck!

Bad calculation by the deputy. I can see how the cane was initially perceived to be a long gun, but once the deputy acquired target fixation, there was apparently no letting go. Too bad. Heard the deputy was pretty upset.

The old guy should never have gotten out of his truck. Reaching for his cane was an absolutely stupid thing to do.
He should realize by now that our LEO's are scared $__tless of every citizen they stop and are fully combat trained to neutralize any perceived threat with overwhelming firepower.

A very elderly man is shot in the chest by a nervous cop with pour judgement and the wrong temperament for a law enforcement officer for the crime of reaching to get his cane. The cop is getting an additional paid vacation now (known to government employees as paid administrative leave) while his department goes through the process of exonerating him. And you feel sorry for the cop?
Look, I know the cop feels bad because he F**K*D UP (and that is what he did). But he clearly doesn’t have the fortitude or judgement to be a law enforcement officer IMHO.
Well, at least the cop got home safely that night and that’s the important thing.
Yeah, if you fought for freedom in WW2, and didn't grow up in a police state, it is easy to think you can still get out of your car and go over and talk to a cop. The rest of us know to stay in car, heads bowed, eyes down, hands on the steering wheel, and say "yes sir" and "no sir".
