Should the video footage of Steve Irwin's tragic death be published?

If Mr. Irwin did not state explicitly that he wanted the video to be aired in the media, it's the family's decision.

Exploitation to whet the bloodlust of the public? Bread and circuses redux?

I was not a fan for several reasons which are irrelevant here. My kid however, LOVED the show and the man and grieved hard when he died. Truly grieved. Viewing his demise would be traumatic for many.

Airing this unfortunate man’s final moments would indeed be “ghoulish and prurient”

I was a fan of Steve. Very entertaining show.
But no need to see his traumatic end.

It should definitely be left up to his family. I don't need to see it.

Why is this on Brietbart?

I don’t believe in tempting fate or God. The ONLY right way to deal with poisonous snakes is with a 12 gauge shotgun.

Sure I'm aware of the counterarguments. That to release the Steve Irwin death footage would be ghoulish and prurient, that it would be offensive to his wife and kids, that such a private and personal moment as a man's death should stay private.

There you have it, Delingpole, the counterargument is exactly right and it buries your argument.

Should the video footage of Steve Irwin's tragic death be published?

Didn't we used to call these things "snuff films?"

If Mr. Irwin did not state explicitly that he wanted the video to be aired in the media, it's the family's decision.

I can't find a reference right at the moment, but at the time he died, there were quotes in the media suggesting that he had said that if he was ever killed on camera, he did want the footage to be aired.

It's his wife's decision, legally, and she's made it. It also seems unlikely the footage exists anymore. It was supposedly destroyed.

Here is how I would answer the question.

If Steve had accidentally skewered a sting ray with a spear, do you think Steve would want it in the movie ?

I always thought the dood had solid steel testicles... or a loose screw, not sure which, exactly.

That being said, anyone who need more than a verbal explanation of what happened seems a little (or a lot) twisted to me. There are lots of things that ARE on video that I choose to not view for what I consider solid and personal reasons. Mainly, it's just gore at that point and I tend to not enjoy watching people suffer and die, regardless of the way it happens. Hell, I even have trouble watching those dumb videos on TV of skateboarders smashing their nuts all the time. I don't know how anyone could even have a desire to watch a guy get stabbed in the heart and die... sickening

If somebody wants to show it and somebody else wants to watch it, that’s all that matters. It’s called “FREEDOM”.

“Should the video footage of Steve Irwin’s tragic death be published?”

IMHO, Steve Irwin took stupid risks to make a buck. Folks watched his show because eventually he was going to miscalculate and one of those animals was going to protect itself.

The decapitation of Daniel Pearl wasn’t televised. That was a video which would have been impactful.

Wasn’t Irwin involved in an incident in which he was holding his infant daughter while he was inside a pen, fooling around with a crocodile? At the time, it was compared with the Michael Jackson incident a year or two earlier where Jackson dangled the baby over the side of a balcony.
