Why 'Crocodile Hunter' Steve Irwin's Final Moments Should Be Televised
Big Hollywood ^ | March 12, 2014 | James Delingpole

Posted on 03/13/2014 9:49:36 PM PDT by This Just In

Steve Irwin had one of the weirdest deaths imaginable: stung multiple times in the heart by a stingray which had probably mistaken him for a tiger shark. His final words, we now know from his cameraman, Justin Lyons, were: "I'm dying."

Should the video footage of Steve Irwin's tragic death be published?

If Mr. Irwin did not state explicitly that he wanted the video to be aired in the media, it's the family's decision.

Exploitation to whet the bloodlust of the public? Bread and circuses redux?

Frankly, I thought Delingpole’s argument was a little weak.

I was not a fan for several reasons which are irrelevant here. My kid however, LOVED the show and the man and grieved hard when he died. Truly grieved. Viewing his demise would be traumatic for many.

Airing this unfortunate man’s final moments would indeed be “ghoulish and prurient”

To say “in poor taste” is to minimize just how tasteless the notion is.

I was a fan of Steve. Very entertaining show.
But no need to see his traumatic end.

It should definitely be left up to his family. I don't need to see it.

Why is this on Brietbart?

I wasn’t a fan of Steve Irwin’s style as well. It’s true that he was widely popular, and created a lot of interest, but his intrusion-if you will-on these animals were oddly enough a disharmonious approach to wildlife.

RIP, Mr. Irwin. You were a brave and talented man.

I don’t believe in tempting fate or God. The ONLY right way to deal with poisonous snakes is with a 12 gauge shotgun.

Excellent question.

Delingpole stated:

“Even as he lay dying in the boat while one of his cameramen desperately tried to administer CPR another cameraman kept on filming. Why? Because Irwin had given strict instructions that anything which happened to him while he was out filming should be recorded.”

Well, just because Mr. Irwin gave strict instructions of continue filming doesn’t mean he wanted the taping of his final moment to be aired on the screen.

Sure I'm aware of the counterarguments. That to release the Steve Irwin death footage would be ghoulish and prurient, that it would be offensive to his wife and kids, that such a private and personal moment as a man's death should stay private.

There you have it, Delingpole, the counterargument is exactly right and it buries your argument.

We have a lot of rattlers in our area. My family and I are careful while out hiking, swimming, fishing, exploring, etc. If there’s a snake slithering around while we’re out, you can bet it’s going to be dispatched.

The thing about Irwin was his insistence on “respect” for dangerous animals, yet he showed little to none himself.

From wikipedia

Irwin’s death is believed to be the only fatality from a stingray ever captured on video.[84] A copy of the footage was reviewed by the Queensland state police, but eventually, all copies of the video were reportedly destroyed at the request of Irwin’s family.[85][86][87][88][89] Production was completed on Ocean’s Deadliest, which was broadcast in the US on the Discovery Channel on 21 January 2007. The documentary was completed with footage shot in the weeks following the accident, but without including any mention of Irwin’s accidental death.[90][91]
