Iowa GOP Senate hopefuls not committed to McConnell leadership

It’s not only in Kentucky where Mitch McConnell is facing a challenge.

The U.S. Senate minority leader, who has to get past a tea party challenger to get to the general election where the Democratic opponent is gaining traction, isn’t getting much love from Iowa Republicans who hope to help the GOP to win back control of the Senate in this fall’s mid-term elections.

Sam Clovis, a retired Air Force colonel and college professor, doesn’t mince words when asked whether he’ll support McConnell, a five–term senator who has been minority leader since 2007.

“I think we need a change in leadership in the United States Senate,” he said at a Republican forum in Ida Grove back in November. “I’m going to go onto the floor of the Senate and make sure that vote goes to a leader other than the one we have right now. That’s the first thing.”

If that wasn’t clear enough, Clovis told a tea party gathering in December that “If Mitch McConnell still wants to be the leader, he’s not going to have my vote.”

Former U.S. Attorney Matt Whitaker has been a bit more nuanced. When asked about the Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare, during a Tea Party Express interview, Whitaker said he favors repeal.

“But who the leader is in the Senate is going to make a big difference,” Whitaker said, “and if it’s someone like Sen. McConnell from Kentucky I’m not sure we’re going to have the same opportunities to advance a conservative agenda including repealing Obamacare that we would with a true conservative leader.”

I haven't looked into the Iowa race very much at all. But I like this guy Clovis!!

A NO vote on McConnell leadership in either a majority or minority capacity is my litmus test for the Georgia Senatorial candidate to replace Saxby Chambliss. If the candidate won’t pledge to oust McConnell, I won’t vote for him or her, period. That includes Broun, the front runner.

Do you know anything about him. Don’t know why but the Iowa Senate race has been completely off my radar.

Of those with a shot to win Clovis, Whitaker and Ernst make me the most comfortable in their positions. Jacobs is too noncommittal, Schaben has no shot, as much as I like him.

Yes. I’ve watched the debate between the candidates. He is the most solid of them. Joni Ernst would be acceptable, but Clovis is better.

calling mcconnell a ‘leader’ is like calling yellow snow a work of art.

What would the next GOP leader propose, other than end Obamacare, the GOP is running on empty? If that’s all the GOP has, why bother? Anyway, McConnell gets what he wanted. Obama won’t be reelected.

Not committed is no where close to being good enough.

Warms my heart to hear you say that. I served with Sam Clovis in the AF in Project Checkmate more than 30 years ago. He’s the real deal and Iowa would be hard put to find a better Senator to represent them. He may not look tall, dark and handsome but he is smart, courageous and unequalled when it comes to ethics.

Perry needs to come learn from Clovis. Rand Paul, too, but it’s too late for him, he’s circling the drain.

Sam Clovis is indeed a sterling person and would make an unbelievably good senator.

Unfortunately, the GOP nominee for Harkin’s open Senate seat will be the self-financed Mark Jacobs. Might not matter, as Democrat Bruce Braley is probably the next US Senator from Iowa.

All the likely candidates are squishy on illegal immigration, including Clovis, but at least him I trust.

this is EXACTLY how so called Republicans gave us Obama. Do things exactly as I say or I'll stay home....thanks for nothing.

“McConnell has an over 90% rating with whoever measures conservative politicians....good enough for me!”

Yes, McConnell is a conservative. And carefully votes conservative to fool his constituents, and you obviously. And if he were just a back-bench senator with his record, I would support his reelection.

But he is the republican leader, and has helped Obama and the democrats and undermined the conservatives at every turn. He has tried to pack the US senate with moderates through the NRSC.

Wake up! I hope you don’t live in Kentucky!
