Assuming it did directly fly over the island from Malaysia, it would have been at night.

Ahhhh; the light dawns! THAT would explain why India's Andaman Islands air defense radar station wouldn't pick it up: it was at night, so the operator was in bed asleep! /sarc

Yes; I "know" (per a Daily Mail story) that they only operate that station intermittently, depending on "threat levels".

From the photo, it would appear that the Malaysian airliner is being closely followed by the Partridge Family plane.

There’s no telling what nefarious purpose the hippies will put it to.

I’m not aviation expert, but it’s my impression that on airplanes the pointy end generally is in the front. So as far as the direction of travel, you can probably take it from there...

Different phenomenon.

It is easy to find examples of the separate color-filtered images of flying aircraft, as in your Wired article, but this image doesn’t fit that pattern at all.
