The threat to close the Bosphorus to Russia comes from a report by Hvylya, citing a Turkish diplomatic source. According to the source, Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan yesterday spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the phone and warned of the consequences for conflict with Ukraine. The Hvylya source was also reported on by UNIAN.

Concerns were also raised about the possible threat to ethnic Crimean Tatars in the region, citing recent murders and communications with Tatar leadership. Erdogan’s call to Putin warned that if Russia invades Ukraine, and so-called ‘Crimean self-defense’ forces engage in violence against the Tatar minority, Turkey will be forced to close passage into the Black Sea to Russian ships.

Putin will discover that the Black Sea isn't his playground. Good for Turkey...their act is more influential than the sum of chattering of all the G8 put together.

The Black Sea has bee a “Russian Lake” for some time now. I don’t give the Turks a Chinaman’s chance if they start something.

Not taking sides here -— just pointing out the obvious.

BTW interesting historical tidbit. Ever wonder what John Paul Jones did after helping America win its independence?

Will Turkey finally give back the northern part of Cyprus?

The Black Sea has been the Russian playground for a couple of centuries now. For obvious geopolitical reasons.

Closing the Bosphorus doesn’t affect that. It just means the Russkies won’t be able to go play anywhere else with their Navy.

BTW, I think the term “blockade” is used inaccurately here. The Turks aren’t trying to pen the Russian Navy in their ports, just keep them from transiting through Turkish waters.

The problem with the blockade is that Russia uses the strait to ship oil to Europe. And I believe Turkey gets about 40% of their oil from Russia.

Turkey is totally toothless.

Putin could roll over them and their NATO promises.

Nobody has the balls to confront Russia at this time.

Just the facts as I see them.....

Does anybody think Putin would hesitate a second to order the Russian navy to sink any Turkish ship or shoot down any Turkish plane that tried to enforce the blockade, it's not as if Turkey can put a giant gate across the Bosphorus....

They don't have to. The entire Bosphorus can be covered with land based artillery.

FYI: "Bosphorus" means cow crossing. It's a term from Greek mythology. Zeus concealed one of his human girl friends by turning her into a cow, but Hera found her anyway and sent a swarm of bees to sting her. So the cow jumped across the Bosphorus to get away. That's where the name comes from.

As Churchill and some unfortunate Australians discovered.

there is one portion of the straits that is difficult to navigate and Turkey straddles both sides of the strait. The entire strait is at maximum 3 miles wide and 32 miles in length. The strait has a curvature in it that makes for the difficulty and it narrows significantly there. The City of Istanbul (formerly known as Constantinople) is the area in question.

And now that I think about it... didn't Xerxes do precisely that? A bridge of boats is effectively a gate.

There’s no doubt the Bosporus is a major chokepoint.

Turkey has one of the largest armed forces in the Middle East and is fairly well equipped. Russia would have to be able to project enough power to Turkey, which would have home court advantage.

Istanbul was Constantinople
Now it’s Istanbul, not Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Now it’s Turkish delight on a moonlit night

Every gal in Constantinople
Lives in Istanbul, not Constantinople
So if you’ve a date in Constantinople
She’ll be waiting in Istanbul

Even old New York was once New Amsterdam
Why they changed it I can’t say
People just liked it better that way

So take me back to Constantinople
No, you can’t go back to Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Why did Constantinople get the works?
That’s nobody’s business but the Turks

Istanbul (Istanbul)

The Turks historically are pretty tough fighters. I think Putey would take this somewhat seriously.
