States looking at $0 community college tuition

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Nothing sparks consumer demand like the word "free," and politicians in some states have proposed the idea of providing that incentive to get young people to attend community college.

Amid worries that U.S. youth are losing a global skills race, supporters of a no-tuition policy see expanding access to community college as way to boost educational attainment so the emerging workforces in their states look good to employers.

Of course, such plans aren't free for taxpayers, and legislators in Oregon and Tennessee are deciding whether free tuition regardless of family income is the best use of public money. A Mississippi bill passed the state House, but then failed in the Senate.

The debate comes in a midterm election year in which income inequality and the burdens of student debt are likely going to be significant issues.

I assume they will be just as successful as free preschool through 12th grade.

My nephew tried to get into a community college in his state and was basically told “minorities come first”....

This will dumb down community colleges as they become a catch-all for “13th graders”.

OK, if the local voters (tax base) approve of it, that’s their business. But if they’re smart, standards will apply. You show up for classes and workshops when scheduled, turn in the work assigned when due and maintain an acceptable GPA. Otherwise, out you go. No “coasting” at taxpayer expense.

Oh- wait; would that be racist if enforced upon minority students? < /sarc >

Well, okay. So long as the taxes collected don't go to shoring up underfunded pensions for retired professors and janitors.

We're trusting you on this.

This is not a new idea. It was $3 a unit when I went to a community college in California during the 1990’s. $45 for a full time quarter. Basically free except for textbooks.

Many community colleges offer the same rubbish curriculae of women’s studies, psychology and social work that universities do

If they want to make them successful, really help people, and help the country - they will minimize the nonsense, and go much more to add technical training - machining, electronics, construction, engine repair, etc....

“What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives every thing its value.” Instead of giving it away make the students earn it. Make it zero tuition for those with A averages, 20% for B average, 50% for C average, etc. Use the high school GPA for incoming freshmen, and calculate it semester by semester after that.
