Free day at Kansas City Zoo ends in violence
Kansas City Star ^ | March 18, 2014 | MATT CAMPBELL and TONY RIZZO

The Kansas City Zoo will again review its policies after a frightening spasm of violence Tuesday afternoon that included shots fired in the parking lot.

There were no reported gunshot injuries, but zoo officials want to avoid having the animal park gain a reputation for being unsafe on days when it is open for free to residents of Jackson and Clay counties.

Tuesday’s disturbances followed another incident on a free day last April when a police officer breaking up a fight in the parking lot got a bloody nose. In both cases, the free admission drew crowds that were too big for the zoo to handle.

“I’m always concerned about how people feel about the zoo,” zoo director Randy Wisthoff said shortly after Tuesday’s incident. “That’s always at the top of my plate, that people feel safe here.”

Several witnesses on Tuesday described a chaotic scene of brawls and gunshots.

Kristi Sharp Patterson, who was at the zoo Tuesday with her children, said that as they were leaving, she saw people on the ground in handcuffs, and crowds were gathering around.

“Next thing you know shots were fired in the parking lot right in front of the zoo and everyone started screaming and running in every direction,” Patterson told The Star. “By far the scariest experience ever.”

A reputable establishment should never use the word “free” in describing their admission policies. It only serves to attract the ‘free-shit’ crowd, with their attendant sense of entitlement. Much better to say “admission fee not required for entrance day”.

Uncivilized cretins.

They have been... and they always will be the reason why decent folk cannot have anything or do anything.

These uncivilized sub-humans.

But I can’t say I am better than them or else that would be raysiss. To hell with that, I AM better than them. My family is better than them. My family and I are civilized humans... civilized members of society that know how to live among other civilized humans.
These creatures are a different species not related to me or my family at all.

They just had a similar incident on “Free Student Day” at the Florida State Fair in Tampa.

Animals can’t control themselves.

There are times and settings where fees serve a purpose aside from profit.

Yeah, it was hilarious listening to interviews of people that fled the zoo - “teen this and teens that... blah blah blah”.

Voters in Clay and Jackson counties were promised four free days a year in return for approving a 1/8-cent zoo sales tax in 2011.

“We can’t just take that away,” Wisthoff said.

Why not? They weren't promised free-for-all days, now, were they?

And another thing. The zoo had better damn well be making it public when these "free" days for Special Voters are. If I had paid to get in, I'd be raising holy heck.

Avoid anything “free” where there is a high (>10%) “teen” population.

Much better to say “admission fee not required for entrance day”.

And write it in cursive.

If something is free these folks will sniff it out, no need to advertise. The St. Louis Zoo is free all the time. The grandkids love to go there but there are times when feral packs roam about crowding everyone out of their way.
