Radar Hits of 'Significant Size' Registered in Indian Ocean: Flight Crew
ABC NEWS ^ | 4-20-2014 | ABC News

A flight crew scouring the southern Indian Ocean for a missing Malaysia Airlines plane tells ABC News that they're getting radar hits of "significant size," indicating something lurking below the water's surface.

ABC News' David Wright, on board the US Navy P-8 Poseidon, said the crew tells him the radar indicates "there is something down there."

It is still too early to tell if the radar hits are related to the missing plane, which was carrying 239 people when it disappeared on March 8.

The P-8 is among four aircraft and one merchant ship heading to a region off the coast of Australia after two objects that may be related to the plane were spotted by satellite, officials said Thursday.

Well, suppose, for the sake of argument, the flight crew noticed a problem with the electrical system. Perhaps a small amount of smoke or a glitch in the power supply.

The problem with that is that there is not one iota of evidence that there was any kind of problem. Second in such an event their oxygen masks drop. Third they push one button the cabin pressure increases forcing all the smoke out. Fourth they push another button and the computer takes them right back to the airfield they just left.

So they program the autopilot to take them to the nearest emergency airfield

So then why didn't they go to those airfields?? They went right by two airfields when they turned around without as much as a wink. If that plane had been programmed for those airfields they would have been there -- smoke or no smoke.

The pilot Rush had on said the protocol in case of fire was to land ASAP within 10 minutes. At 20 minutes the plane is consumed.

Does the autopilot take you to a certain point, or does it just send you down a certain heading? I am not familiar with airliners, but in small aircraft, you just pick a heading, and the autopilot flies along that line, until it gets another instruction.

9 Months ago, The MOL Comfort, a MITSUI OSK Line Panamax Container ship, broke in two and sank off of Yemen.

It had around 3600 containers on board, and they have been washing up all over the Indian Ocean in recent weeks.

Well, I hope this is it, actually.

The worst possible out come for the world is that it was hijacked and is being set up for further terrorist actions.

I am saddened for anyone who lost their life, as I too fly a lot, but a crash is less of a danger to us all than the possibility of a jumbo jet in the hands of some murderous fanatics.

After they finally figure this out, I hope there is a thorough investigation to find what went wrong and apply that information on to other airlines.

I think it can be done either or both ways.

The longest containers you typically see are 45 feet, though Wikipedia says they come in sizes up to 56. The item in the photo is 79 feet long. It could be a wing at 79 feet - or it could be a photographic artifact or a blasted whale. Won’t know until they find something. The suspense is killing m . . . zzzzz.

I am no satellite photo analyst, but the more I look at it the more I see the sun reflecting off the face of a large wave or the white foam from a breaking wave. I hope they had multiple frames showing this item in different positions before they told the world they had something. I see about 10 similar reflections in the photo that has been distributed.

At 20 minutes the plane is consumed.

I agree. I don't believe the fire theory. I think it would have crashed a lot sooner if there was a fire.

I know the two are the same image. I only posted what was with the news story. They had both just as I posted them. It is actually one graphic, not two pics.
