Last week, Virginia Beach, Virginia sixth grader Adrionna Harris noticed her classmate doing something terrible he was cutting his arm with a small razor. The Bayside Middle School student knew that was wrong, so she stepped in and took the razor away, and threw it out. It was an act that one mightthink would earn her praise from her school. As WAVY 10 On Your Side News reports, it instead earned her a suspension and possible expulsion.
Thats right, Adrionna received a 10-day suspension, the only reason being because she had admitted what happened. With the weapon disposed, it was her truthfulness that led to the punishment. Adrionnas mother, Rachel Harris, is understandably frustrated with the schools actions. She told WAVY, I felt she did the right thing
There was not a teacher in sight while this boy was cutting himself. She felt like it was almost a 911 situation, that she had to help immediately, like there wasnt time to find a teacher
The school system over-reached absolutely. As Adrionna herself put it,
I was just trying to help.

Why would you WANT your child to return to a place that treated her like this?
If the school doesn’t have a precise policy for this one precise situation and it’s not public information....then this is a sue-easily situation and the county board lawyer is just shaking his head at what is going to occur over the next year.
Where we are lacking....is simple common sense. We’ve lost it over the past decade or two, and can’t possibly make rational decisions. Sadly, all the WW II vets who used to run the school and board decisions....are mostly gone. So we have the new PhD crowd, without any real grasp of reality.
I wonder...
It hasn’t been reported on before but is there a similar standard of zero-tolerance placed on these school administrators? It might explain their bizarre lack of common-sense in these kinds of situations.
How long will people “do the right thing” if they keep getting punished for it?
For the compassion and bravery this young lady exhibited she should be rewarded by switching to a school worthy of someone of her character.
Zero tolerance is about avoiding potential lawsuits.
I hope someone explains to this kid that he really did the right thing.
Doing the right thing will become an underground teaching, like God during the Russian Gulags.
Well, they’d be creating one from me. That, and depriving themselves of one student’s-worth of per-pupil state and federal reimbursements.
“Zero tolerance” refers to the space between the ears of these school administrators.
So many “adults” with no common sense. Simply amazing..& so very sad for the children.
Zero tolerance is about avoiding potential lawsuits.
If that’s the reasoning behind all of this zero-tolerance; it’s certainly not working. The Lawsuits are even stronger because of it.
I am SOOOO glad to be homeschooling my Sons!
Well, it looks like schools ARE actually teaching their students something. However, I’m pretty certain that it is not what the morons who teach them had intended. Perhaps there is hope for the future after all.
See? The system works!
I can't tell from the article.
The lesson learned from the “Administrators” is:
If you see a child with a gun about to blow their brains out do nothing or you will suspended for stopping them.
Mindnumbingly stupid decision from the administrations and the school board.
Good for this young lady to do the right thing for the right reasons. A pox on the school and all associated with the folly that has followed
Your point is correct... just one small correction. Adrionna is a she.
Not for stopping them; most likely for "handling a weapon" as you take it away and put it in a safe place. /S
Best scene in the movie IMHO.
