Rep. Ted Poe: 'Cold War II' Is Coming

Texas Republican Rep. Ted Poe said Friday the uncertainty over Russia's aggression in Ukraine is causing "Cold War II."

In an interview with Fox News' Defcon 3 program, Poe said Russia President Vladimir Putin "does have his eyes on the former Soviet republics."

"That uncertainty is causing the international tension," said Poe, who serves on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

"We're in Cold War II. The Russians know it ... but I don't think the United States knows it."

Two days after Ukraine conceded defeat in the face of Russia’s takeover of its military bases in Crimea, Poe asserted Russia is "in Crimea to stay."

"We seem not be concerned about the Russian aggression in the east," he said, adding: "I'm not sure NATO would come to the defense if [Russia were to make a move on] Estonia. I think Putin is going to wait and see."

Despite the Obama administration's assurance to NATO allies, Poe said the United States “hasn’t done anything” effective in response to Russia’s actions in Crimea.

A European commentator very astutely asked today, “Well, what’s wrong with the Cold War? It kept us from a nuclear war!”

“but I don't think the United States knows it”

The majority of the political leaders and the population in general is in complete denial as to the fact the most of the rest of the world want to kill all of us..

Since Vietnam our enemies have learned the US military cannot be defeated but given time Americans will unilaterally disarm themselves and surrender...

Bolshevik! To have a war you have to have two parties fighting and doesn’t count ass war when you have Putin fighting against a surrender monkey!

Bingo. Perestroika was a tactical way of advancing the communist agenda.

Not to argue with that but last year America sold 122 Billion worth of goods to China.

America bought 440 Billion worth from China.

Just saying...

What has prompted "Cold War II" is NATO's wholesale expansion across Eastern Europe, right up to Russia's doorstep. After promising Moscow that we wouldn't expand our treaty alliance into those nations if Russia agreed to withdraw its troops from them, NATO took in 12 new members from 1999 to 2004. But we miscalculated in the Black Sea, first with Georgia and now in Ukraine, prompting Russia to declare its own "Monroeski Doctrine" and defend its vital lake.

Thank God that we weren't "successful" in bringing Georgia or Ukraine into full NATO membership, or else we would be treaty-bound to go to war with Russia to defend them. For Russia, the Black Sea in general and its Crimean bases in particular are vital to its defense and worth going to war to keep out of its adversaries' hands. For America, neither is a vital interest and therefore are not worth going to war over.

Quite possibly.

The left seems to imagine that weakness and appeasement are the proper means for assuring peace; but history tells a very different story...

The Cold War was not a time of being protected from nuclear war, it was the opposite, it was a constant state of war where the fingers were all on the button 24 hours a day and full armies were facing each other across a gap, the Soviets being an army fully developed for attack with many Airborne divisions and bridge building and Armor units. It was a war where Western Europe could fall in a week or two under the mass of war power staged on their borders.

It was always tense, and we almost had it in the 1980s.

I am kind in that boat. I think the Cold War wasn't as hot for awhile, but might be heating up again. I never trusted the Ruskies. I wonder if Putin will still allow Russian hockey players to play in the NHL?

I was in Germany from 1980 to 1984. I was in Mainz-Kastel. I was on the wrong side of the Rhine.

I used to spend time in Weisbaden in a NG unit assigned to the 165th Military Intelligence Battalion from 1983 to 1986.

Those were tense and exciting years.
