Here is the Kicker!!!
There will be a ceremony on June 10 in France to turn Gordons remains over to his family. For the flight across the Atlantic, representatives of the Canadian, German and French military will escort Gordon, Henry said. Its unclear if the American military will be there, he added.

Come on, guys. The U.S. Army is too busy putting on drag shows to welcome home a war hero who gave his life for his country.
To: Kartographer
If true, a heartfelt thank you is in order, to Canada, Germany and France for doing the honorable thing and escorting his remains and his family home. My, how far my country has fallen.

Hell, this zoomie would put on his service dress and escort this man home.

And at least 1000 US marines are still buried all over Tarawa atoll in unmarked graves. The US government lied to all their families, saying that they were moved to US military cemeteries. The graves were paved over for B-29 Super Fortress runways and misc. roads.

At least one other killed in that vehicle was in German uniform. Weird. What the article doesn’t state is if they were killed in those uniforms or simply had them put on after, prior to burial. From the description they could have had all their clothes burned off.

It does seem strange that he would be wearing a German uniform while riding an American armored vehicle. Without DNA testing, the wallet could be explained as a souvenier picked up by a German POW that was subsequently killed.
Why the German uniform? Was he in any sort of commando unit? Did he have German relatives?

It’s a sad freakin’ day when American military won’t recognize one of our own.....but France does. Hell, even our “enemy”, Germany, does.

Sorry about the previous ping. Gordon was a Canadian and will be buried in Canada, even though he enlisted in the US Army. It’s the University of Wisconsin that is doing the study on the remains. You have to read the WHOLE article to glean that bit of info.

Having lived in Germany for 4 years and visited Normandy. He could have picked up a german overcoat to wear at night. It gets quite chilly after the sun goes down, even in August. Remember that Normandy is about the same latitude as Calgary, Canada.
