Guinea deaths: Ebola blamed for deadly fever outbreak
BBC News ^ | March 22, 2014

The Ebola virus has been identified as the cause of an outbreak of haemorrhagic fever now believed to have killed nearly 60 people in southern Guinea, government officials say.

Scores of cases have been recorded since the outbreak began early last month.

There is no known cure or vaccine for the highly contagious Ebola virus.

It is spread by close personal contact with people who are infected and kills between 25% and 90% of victims.

Symptoms include internal and external bleeding, diarrhoea and vomiting.

The good thing is that it kills the victims quickly before they can spread it too far. The bad thing is that it kills the victims quickly before a rapid diagnosis can be made.

The question is, are these Ebola virus outbreaks being caused by the same thing as Kuru?

No, those are completely different diseases. Ebola is caused by a virus. Kuru is caused by a prion, and is similar to mad cow disease.

If Ebola had a long incubation period while still being transmittable would be the perfect doomsday weapon.

not only human (personal) contact, but in some areas,
some (social/historical)* customs make very difficult to
fight/contain the outbreak. And eating the (four-legged :)
jungle rats is on the diet..they carry the disease, a vector.
*iirc, the surviving female spouse; has sexual relationships with one of
his brothers, keeping the family stable/together..it's their custom.

If it did, and I assure it doesn’t, all it would take to spread it would be close personal contact through a bus, train, or plane into a populated area such as NYC and American cities would be wiped out in a week. It’s the same HZiV crap, Legionairres etc. CDC - Eat Me!

No, Ebola is a filovirus, iirc.

The most likely reservoir is migratory fruit bats, who spread it through guano and being eaten (considered a delicacy).

That's why Ebola and Marburg showed up in rainy weather, near caves and mines, or was contracted by people out hunting, if not contracted from other victims. The hit-or-miss nature of being infected by the migratory bats was why the outbreaks were scattered and seemingly unrelated.

Some of the villages involved in the outbreaks are (or were) more densely populated than any American City and yet fewer than 100 people have died. The transmissibility and morbidity aren't that high. Most likely, merely riding in a subway car with an infected individual isn't going to result in transmission, but I sure wouldn't want to take my chances.

Most of the Ebola outbreaks, I have learned, comes from the eating of infected “bushmeat.” Such meat from wild animals is poached and brought into the cities to be passed off as pork or beef. Kuru is also caused by eating meat. In the case of Kuru, the meat is other human beings. Most likely, the humans are Christians being sacrificed to Allah.

We are fortunate to live in these time in the United States where I can be certain the BBQ’d pork ribs I ate tonight were from pork.

LOL! I can see I have opened myself up.

I confess. That BBQ I had tonight was some road kill I found coming home from work last night.

I don’t know what it is but words have not come out the way they should and I have been going in circles all night.

I’m getting hungry for some of that left over meat just talking about it . . .
