Skip to comments.Fred Phelps: no funeral for the preacher who picketed so many (+video)
Posted on 03/23/2014 11:54:43 AM PDT by Libloather
Fred Phelps, a former street preacher who led a family ministry that raged against what he perceived as a morally bankrupt society, died Thursday. His legacy of picketing funerals of military veterans and disaster victims, promoting coarse language to condemn conduct he viewed as amoral, and waging legal battles that protected his actions under the First Amendment, earned him an international reputation of a mans whose absolute conviction was never swayed in the face of widespread contempt.
The level of his vitriol, the savageness of his comments, were just unmatched anywhere. His rhetoric was such he united people both on the far left to the far right in opposition to him and his message, says Mark Potok, a senior fellow at the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, Ala.
The organization, which tracks hate groups across the US, dubbed the Westboro Baptist Church, which Phelps founded in 1955, arguably the most obnoxious and rabid hate group in America.

Best thing to do to attention whores, ignore them.
Even the opening statement is wrong. Phelps didn’t protest against a morally bankrupt society, he and his inbred retard family did everything they could to take a big steaming dump on America. I’m glad the miserable old coot is dead.
Since i am on dialysis, I will show up with a 5 gallon can of gasoline, nah screw that grade A rocket fuel!!!
Too bad Phelps won’t notice it.
I would put his bones in low Earth Orbit.
Tragic death? Yes, indeed! His actions seem to indicate a non-saved person. If he was not saved (only God knows) and died in that state, it was indeed tragic.
One was absolutely NO mention of how connected he was to Al Gore and the Democrat Party through the late 80s and even into the 90s when he attended the Clinton inauguration. Remember that this type of hatred had its home in the Democrat Party for years. Now they want to whitewash that.
Second, the press and "experts" they interviewed can't help trying to suggest that a lot of other conservative Christians hold his beliefs:
If you took away [Westboros] flamboyant style, youd find that quite a lot of people share their point of view, to a fair extent"
I think Phelps really was an atheist, who used his “Church” to give Christians and anti-sodomites a black eye....and the media cooperated with him in this farce.
These guys were nothing more than a little cult, had people just ignored them from the outset they'd have just imploded and gone away. My guess is the reason that didn't happen is the leftist media always wanted to connect them to the religious right and/or attempt to make actual Christians look bad.
Fred Phelps was a Civil Rights lawyer before he started his preacher act- and the entire church thing may well have been an act.
Gotta love that they use a hate group SPLC to counter another hate group!
It lead to a more pro-sodomite world, that’s for sure.
Just like Jim Jones, sans Kool-Aid.
And yet I will pray that God have mercy on his soul and give him a seat in paradise. How messed up is that?
I’ll buy that!
I think that, too. Many liberals try to pretend they are a member of a group that they want to discredit.
Phelps will not be missed.
Here is my question, where did they get their money from?
Hope he says hi to the swimmer.
May he find whatever peace he is due
That is my belief, as well.
An agent provocateur, at best.
The Church of the Poison Mind.
They’re all lawyers, they stole it through legal means.
CSM quoting the SPLC? So much for the CSM...
The funniest thing about Phelps and Company.....You never saw them protesting at Gay Pride marches.
...earned him an international reputation of a mans whose absolute conviction was never swayed in the face of widespread contempt.
I disagree with this. This would mean that he was at least respected for sticking to his guns.
I have seen no evidence whatsoever that this group of people led by Phelps, was viewed by anyone with anything other than extreme contempt. He wasn't respected on any level whatsoever.
Whatever sound message he may have at one time had, it preceded him in death decades earlier.
That’s a very good question.
Probably from apparatchiks behind the scenes who supported his actions against Christianity.
arguably the most obnoxious and rabid hate group in America.
No, the Democrat Party still holds that title.
They killed fewer people than Al Sharpton and his crew.
Known by the company they keep.
That’s the only question that need be asked. If journalism still existed, the Phelps farce would have been dead and buried a long time ago.
Fred was a lifelong member of the party, so Westboro could be considered a subsidiary.
Hey Potok....they were BIG supporters of AL GORE!!! Maybe they still are....they are DEMOCRATS....that’s why they are such a NASTY bunch.
Barry also started out as an ACLU Lawyer, and then got his license as a Christian minister, even though I'm pretty sure he's Jewish.
I only know one thing for sure....they are EVIL, VILE people who are ANTI-CHRISTIAN as can be.
It won’t surprise me if some group decided to stage a public, unauthorized memorial service for Fred Phelps. The image of Fred Phelps will either be hung in effigy or beaten as a painted pinata. A memorial service would be held for the expressed purpose of getting together and talking about the negative impact his ‘church’ has had on others, year after year, frivolous lawsuit after frivolous lawsuit. Someone needs to make a documentary about this groups’ toxic effect on it’s community.
isn’t Fred Phelps Sr. the one who died? Jr is the one in the photo.
You are correct. The old man was a big time Democrat too.
You do realize that they protested at funerals of gay men who died of AIDS, long before they protested at military funerals? That was how he started becoming famous/infamous.
Were they afraid it would be picketed or afraid it wouldn’t be?
They're Democrats; what do you expect?
Not true,. Mr. Potok. You and the people at SPLC (a well-known hate group, like Westboro) can easily match it. You do so many times each and every day.
I was surprised to learn that this disgusting family is highly educated, owns a successful law practice firm. Clients would hire them because of their success record.
