Sen. Mark S. Kirks decision not to campaign this year against his in-state Democratic colleague should come as no surprise.
While Kirk has said he will support the Republican ticket in November and has committed to actively assisting the partys gubernatorial nominee Bruce Rauner, the Illinois Republican told the Chicago Sun-Times Lynn Sweet that he wont be stumping for Republican Senate nominee Jim Oberweis.
Kirk said he wants to protect his working relationship with Democratic Sen. Richard J. Durbin by not launching into a partisan jihad. But there are other equally compelling reasons not to hit the campaign trail against Durbin.
The Senate majority whip is already overwhelmingly favored to defeat Oberweis, a state senator, dairy magnate and perennial candidate whos lost several congressional elections already, and no amount of Kirk appearances are likely to change that. Kirk will be up for re-election in two years in this solidly Democratic state, where his ability to work with both parties is a crucial asset to his success. And its an added bonus if Durbin feels less inclined to stump against Kirk in 2016.
As Kirk said in a wide-ranging January interview with CQ Roll Call, he is already preparing for what should be a competitive race in 2016. He won President Barack Obamas former seat in 2010 with 48 percent of the vote, and he will likely enter the next election cycle as a top Democratic target.

I mean, Kirk is such a mensch: he suffers massive brain damage and you hardly tell the difference in policies before and after!
Kirk is and always has been a RINO idiot.
IL Senate PING
I would say 2 things
A)Who wants that little maggot’s help? I wouldn’t. I encourage him to be honest and just endorse Durbin.
B)Oberweis can’t win no matter who helps him, so who cares?
What’s the chance Turban will return the favor in a couple of years?
Plus, why waste the political capital when Oberweis has no chance of winning anyway? Pick your battles, this ain’t one I’d pick.
I’m supporting Oberweis.
“Plus, why waste the political capital when Oberweis has no chance of winning anyway? Pick your battles, this aint one Id pick.”
Probably true but note that Kirk values his relationship with a democrat more than doing what he can to assist his own party. And why, because he’s closer in philosophy to the democrat than the republican. Which is why every one of these people need to be removed. Given his stroke, Kirk probably won’t run again in 2016, but either way, the seat is easy pickings for the democrats, as moderate republicans usually are. Scott Brown, Liddy Dole, Lincoln Chafee, etc, were all easily dispatched.
Kirk NEEDS to be PRIMARIED!!! Maybe by Oberweis!! Let’s see if Turbin helps Kirk!!
That’s a weird lamp.
Or maybe by someone else. Oberweis is a a perennial loser who would pose no threat to Marky boy.
I agree that a conservative should run against Sen. Kirk, in the 2016 primary.
If Sen. Oberweis loses, this year, he’ll run for re-election to the state senate, in 2016.
bkmk
Turban Durbin will give it to Kirk right in the neck in two years. And he'll deserve it.
Slim to none, and I just saw Slim at the Greyhound depot.
