Obama doesn’t grasp Putin’s Eurasian ambitions
washington post ^ | March 19 | editorial board

Posted on 03/26/2014 11:59:49 AM PDT by UMCRevMom@aol.com

"... It’s necessary, however, to take some of what Mr. Putin said seriously, because of the implicit threat it poses to European and global security. Mr. Putin advanced a radical and dangerous argument: that the collapse of the Soviet Union left “the Russian nation” as “one of the biggest, if not the biggest ethnic group in the world to be divided by borders.” That, he suggested, gave Moscow the right to intervene in Crimea, and, by extension, anywhere it considers ethnic Russians or their culture to be threatened."

RE: “Obama doesn’t grasp Putin’s Eurasian ambitions.”

I don't grasp it, either.

I don't think Conservatives have completely thought this issue through.

The only way Putin can recreate the old Soviet Union is to recreate the old totalitarian police state that kept it all together.

Is that his plan?

Really?

Well, I guess anything is possible.

But I'm not going to worry about Crimea until I see a lot more evidence that Putin's goal in life is to become a violent mass murderer and dictator.

Yes he does and he is supporting it. This is exactly what he and the Democrats wants. This is not stupidity, niavetivity, errors, wishfull thinking, moronic foreign policy, reset or redo. This what he plans for the total destruction of the US. And Hannity, it is not medial bias or spending our childrens money. This a plan of destruction. period

Sarah Palin better watch out or her House will be IN Russia! They may ask for Alaska Back! Still, I think Sarah might get along with Vlad—they could go hunting together.

I don't think these NeoCons controlling the WAPO editorial board grasp it.

There are only a few countries in Eurasian agreement and the Collective Security Treaty Organization(CSTO) and most have no interest in joining.

OTOH, they are interested in the EU and NATO

The deal that Putin offered Ukraine was a lot better than the deal that the EU offered Ukraine, but they preferred the EU deal.

Hitler's ambition was invisible in 1933. Especially his ambition to kill all the Jews, which was a state secret as late as 1941 (insert story about Frau von Schirach, who Didn't Get It as late as Christmas Eve 1941), almost a year after the secret Wannsee conference and Protocol.

By the time you realize what Vlad is made of, like Hitler, you'll be awfully late to the effort to stop him.

Well, say that the "plan" is a larger, more powerful, more united Russia.

I don't think Putin is going to want to conquer other peoples as a goal or to establish himself as a tyrant or Russia as a totalitarian state.

But if he really does expand Russia's borders to take in Russians currently outside the Russian Federation, it will probably involve taking in at least a few reluctant subjects, some of them of non-Russian origin, and Putin may feel himself "forced" to centralize power to a greater and greater degree to hold the country together.

So without intending to become a dictator, he may find himself moving in just that direction -- not an unfamiliar pattern for rulers if you study Russian history. Again and again, reformist tsars were frustrated by the degree to which centralized power was necessary to hold the empire together.

RE: “Hitler's ambition was invisible in 1933.”

I completely disagree.

He tried to violently overthrow a democratically elected government in 1923, and Mein Kampf was in bookstores by 1925.

Before 1933:

Hitler explicitly stated his desire for a Pan-German state that included the Rhineland, the Sudetenland, Danzig and the Polish Corridor, and Austria.

He explicitly stated his intention to colonize vast areas of the Soviet Union with German farm families.

He explicitly stated the necessity to avoid war until Germany had rearmed, and he explicitly stated the necessity to avoid a two front war.

He never explicitly called for the extermination of the Jews.

However, he frequently spoke of the need for a “final solution to the Jewish question.”

That phrase had been used by Kaiser Wilhelm 30 years earlier, and meant the eviction of all Jews from the Reich.

[You] But I'm not going to worry about Crimea until I see a lot more evidence that Putin's goal in life is to become a violent mass murderer and dictator.

[Me] Hitler's ambition was invisible in 1933. Especially his ambition to kill all the Jews ....

Recontextualizing my comment, I was referring specifically to becoming "a violent mass murderer" esp. of Jews, and so on.

[Your reply] He never explicitly called for the extermination of the Jews.
However, he frequently spoke of the need for a “final solution to the Jewish question.”
That phrase had been used by Kaiser Wilhelm 30 years earlier, and meant the eviction of all Jews from the Reich.

Then apparently we agree. The complete destruction by mass murder of European Jewry was never specifically articulated until the secret Wannsee Protocol was signed in 1940. It was neither implicit nor explicit in Pan-Germanism, which as you point out favored forcible removal and exile instead.

Of course, that mass destruction promulgated by Wannsee also included Slavs, Romany gypsies, homosexuals of an "objectionable" sort (i.e. not the brownshirted man-grabbers of the SA general staff, nor their Hitler Youth boy-toys), and one or two other existentially-offensive groups.
