The state's minimum wage will increase to $10.10 per hour by 2017 under a controversial bill approved Wednesday by both the state Senate and the House of Representatives on largely party line votes.
The Senate passed the measure by 21 to 14, with all Republicans and one Democrat — Sen. Joan Hartley of Waterbury — voting no. One senator was absent.
The House vote was 87 to 54, and all 87 supporters were Democrats. Four House Democrats, including Representatives John Hampton of Simsbury and Joe Diminico of Manchester, joined with Republicans against the measure.
The bill would boost the wage from the current rate of $8.70 per hour to $10.10 in a series of steps over three years.
Gov. Dannel P. Malloy intends to sign the bill Thursday at 6 p.m. at Café Beauregard, the New Britain restaurant where President Barack Obama ate lunch with Malloy and other New England governors three weeks ago before delivering a speech on hiking the wage.
"Increasing the minimum wage is not just good for workers, it's also good for business," Malloy said after the vote. "This modest increase will give working families a boost, and it will contribute to our economy by getting just a little more money into the pockets of people who will spend it in their communities.''
In a sign of the importance of the measure to the White House and the Democratic Party, Obama released a statement soon after the vote in Hartford that called upon Congress to do the same as Connecticut lawmakers.

First of all, the government does not have the right to set a minimum or maximum wage.
End of discussion.
Union wages are tied to the minimum wage and that is who this bill is meant to “help.” The poor and young people who will lose jobs and see hours cut are simply collateral damage in the statists’ war for power.
In corporate America, it used to be to give consideration to those that have families over those that were single, in the possibility of a promotion.
Now, with higher minimum wage standards being shoved down America’s throat, I suggest firing all the college kids not involved in career paths, versus all of those that are in business administration and any of the engineering disciplines.
Good point. A large union employer, Shaw’s Supermarkets, closed all there stores in the state a while back. Many were bought by non-union chains and reopened.
I would imagine most other unionized workers make over $10.10/hr anyway (i.e. Electric Boat, BDL airport workers, etc.) so they will see little to no benefit from this.
This was partially done to help unions, maybe not in CT, but around the country, and to please Dear Leader so he can considered Malloy a candidate for some DC post.

How many people are going to continue to fall for this election-year ruse and blight on the economy and productivity? Nothing focuses on demagoguery quite like the minimum wage which spins well but which any Econ 101 flunky knows forces lower employment, higher costs, and higher prices.
Malloy is ignorant. If you are dependent on $10.10 an hour to support a family, you are NOT going to have any extra money to spend in the economy. However, you might lose your job because your employer can no longer afford to keep as many employees.

That he can say that with a straight face after all he’s done to ensure Americans remain in poverty strongly suggests a sociopathic personality.
Someone’s got to pay for it, and the minimum wage earners will pay dearly for it.
The Heritage foundation released a good article on how raising the min wage helps unions. The jist is that unions suposedly have skilled labor, albiet overpriced. When unskilled labor becomes overpriced most employers will opt for overpriced skilled labor instead.
Then there are also unions whos contracts state that a raise in the minimum wage must also raise the union wage.

Malloy is Obama on the state level, with Dem controlled House and Senate.
If you ever hear his speak, he sounds just like Obama with his “uh, well, uh, we, uh must pass thus, uh bill to, uh...”
Malloy isn’t very popular in Connecticut.
He is running dead even in the polls with an assumed GOP challenger. The people who don’t like Malloy, REALLY don’t like him, so the conservatives in Connecticut are really fired up. Non-conservatives are apathetic about Malloy.
I think this bill is more of an election-year ploy. Obama polls better than Malloy here in Connecticut. They ARE trying to cash in on voter support for Obama
