Ukraine Claims 100,000 Russian Troops Near Border

Nearly 100,000 Russian forces have massed on Ukraine's border, a top Ukrainian defense official told an American audience Thursday, giving a number far higher than US military estimates.

"Almost 100,000 soldiers are stationed on the borders of Ukraine and in the direction ... of Kharkiv, Donetsk," Andriy Parubiy, chairman of Ukraine's national security council, said via a webcast from Kiev.

"Russian troops are not in Crimea only, they are along all Ukrainian borders. They're in the south, they're in the east and in the north," Parubiy said.

There was never a question of Ukraine merging/joining with the EU. What was on the table was a trade agreement. Russia, as well as its cheerleaders, created a false choice by demanding that EU membership was on the table. The real issue was the fact that Yanukovich, from the time he came to power until he abandoned his country, had been steadily eroding Ukraine’s freedoms. In the great communist tradition, he was working to make sure that his election would be the last democratic election in Ukraine.

All this talk of EU, Soros, Nazis, Muslims, Neocons, socialists, rightwing extremists, fascists or whatever is nonsense stirred up by Putin and repeated by his dishonest and/or credulous followers.

Russia is not threatened in any way by Ukraine, Georgia, Poland, Latvia, Estonia, or Lithuania, yet we are supposed to believe that Putin has a legitimate right to violate the sovereignty of other countries because his tender sensibilities may be violated. Absurd.

100,000 would be too many troops vehicles, etc. to hide, especially in an electronic society. The footprint of forces that large would be HUGE.

The Rueters figure of 25,000-35,000 is likely more accurate, if even that. There is anecdotal evidence of some battalion, and a couple of Brigade-sized moves, but not much else.

Any movement, if it comes, won’t be toward Kiev, but Donetsk (Russian sympathetic), toward Meltipol.

Well....principals only come into play between these two when it’s advantageous to sound principled to the audiance. I think they both know the charade they pull off between them all to well.

I the end there are two pushes by Russia...the first they are pretty much wiped out but recover...the final push will come against the nations....either way Russia’s days are simply numbered when all is said and done.

I don’t think Putin has much faith if any....I do believe he has hawks behind him just as the US does. Not that he isn’t thuggish, because he is, I do think that Bush mad him feel repected as a man and as a leader and why they got along.

But Putin and Obama are about as far apart as any could be...ego maniacs with each other always trying to get the upper hand.

Why, that's just awful. A country protecting its southern border and prepared to act if need be to protect its countrymen on both sides of the border.

Once a country's military crosses said border, that is an act of war.

Look even Putin didn’t like Yanukovich nor the way he was governing Ukraine....that’s just an established fact. At best he tolerated him.

Ynaukovich choice for “euroasia” over “the EU” proposal was there were no strings on Ukraine’s governing going with Russia as well as other considerations. Even after Yanukovich agreed to the Maidens terms, including early elections, they refused and tore into the Government building as a coup.

The whole thing broke open .....with both sides using thugs...which is also an established fact.

I understand why Putin zoomed in on Crimea......and pushed for the referendum to happen quickly....we would have done the same thing and have in the past.

This is going to end up with Ukraine being neutral once again....doing business with Eu and Russia....but there will be no entry into the EU economically nor Nato any time soon at all. The best they can get they got...Economical Agreement with the EU......and least we forgot the down payment for their gold being shipped out to the USA for any funding that comes into their nation.

“There was a day when men stood when a woman came to the table and actually helped seat her.”

The women in that photo would destroy any man who pulled the chair out for them. I once politely opened a door for a feminist. The glare she gave me could kill.

I loved it.

That’s the thing I don’t get.

If we needed to invade Mexico, or even to break up Mexico to promote our national interest I’d be all for it, and if it got the Russians upset, I’d say, basically, T.S.

What’s sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. We have absoloutely zero interests in Ukraine or Belarus that could be a cause of war.
