e latest look at autism in the U.S. shows a startling 30 percent jump among 8-year-olds diagnosed with the disorder in a two-year period, to one in every 68 children.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which did the survey, says the numbers almost certainly reflect more awareness and diagnosis of kids who would have been missed in years past. The new estimate for 2010 was a jump from one in 88 children in 2008, the last year for which numbers had been available.
“The number of children diagnosed with autism continues to rise,” the agency’s Dr. Coleen Boyle told reporters.
But the CDC noted that the numbers vary greatly from state to state, and it did not use a nationally representative sample, but a look at groups of children in 11 states.
“The number of children identified with ASD (autism spectrum disorder) ranged from 1 in 175 children in Alabama to 1 in 45 children in New Jersey,” CDC says in its report, based on a survey taken in 2010. The numbers from 2008 were first reported in 2012.
This would work out to about 1.2 million children under 18, Boyle says.
Dr. Max Wiznitzer, a child neurologist at Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital in Cleveland, who was not involved in the study, said he believed the numbers, but thought they reflected a rise in diagnosis, not "the true prevalence of autism."
“I'm not convinced that the true numbers of autism are rising, rising, rising every time we survey them,” Wiznitzer told NBC News in an interview.
“Over time, more children are being identified,” agreed Dr. Lisa Shulman, a specialist in autism at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Yeshiva University in New York.

You are right about that.
Yes, of course schools get extra money to educate disabled children. They require more attention. I don’t know about other states, but in Ohio, state law requires the school to educate autistic children at 3 years of age or the state gives them scholarship that can be used at certain facilities.

Did I even question that? Genuine autism has morphed into a scam that benefits the education industry (and the unions that run it) and also replaces income in the same manner that disability claims have skyrocketed as unemployment and welfare benefits dried up.
Star Traveler, my grand son is a pure joy and almost always happy, smiling and jumping. He finally has started giving kisses and hugs. Since we bought him trampolines, he has stopped spinning so much. He used to spin from morning til night.

There’s one way to find out. Take it away and see what happens. ASD’s have a huge problem with brain transition. Luckily, it gets much better as they age as long as they don’t keep feeding it.
The things that helped me the most were acting, reading and being in a fraternity. And, well, girls(cough). My first girlfriend (in college, also the first person I ever dated and kissed) had an awful time. I finally wrote and apologized to her decades later.

The increase in autism is not mainly do to government money, as mentioned already, the parents don’t get any benefits from it. It can also be difficult to realize the presence, and not because of denial. Not only the lack of knowledge on the parents part but family doctors, who should know better, often say “ yes, he is a little behind but is still progressing. Don’t worry”. It wasn’t until our son was ~ 15yrs old that he was diagnosed. TV had nothing to do with it, we home-schooled and did not have a TV! Gluten can aggrivate it. ( Modern wheat has been breed to have more gluten then original wheat and does cause problems. Some much for the common thought here that genetically modified food is not harmful).
They all don’t grow out of it, in fact it can become worse. Having people being “encouraging” can hinder behavour, by encouraging denial and stopping progress and dealing with symptoms. As with all people, autistic people are individuals and are different from one another.
While they may be lovable when they are young, they grow up and more problems are encountered.
NO...people have not eaten grains for thousands of years....actually it’s a fairly recent habit...

The real jump in cases could be 'better recognition of autism' or maybe an environmental cause or many other things... not everything is liberals trying to gin the system. I've grown cynical. I'm sorry about that...

There is strong evidence that there are genetic components to autism. There have been more than 20 new gene variants identified by researchers that are linked to autism. There is also evidence that mothers who have induced and augmented labor are at a higher risk for delivering a baby who would eventually be diagnosed with autism. These represent legitimate causes for autism. Gluten is not one of them.
You should stop making this spurious claim on every autism thread. Otherwise, people will keep mistaking you for know nothings like Jenny McCarthy.
My son is on the autism spectrum (Asperger). What we’ve found in our own experience is that the fake sugars, glutin and food colorings do make a difference in his ability to control himself.
When you look at the modern diet and compare it to historic diets, we are markedly different in what we are feeding our children. Previous generations didn’t grow up with so many grains... especially not grains nearly devoid of nutritional content. They didn’t have the loads of sugar added to every food including meat and vegetables. Hell, the next time you’re in the store, try to buy your normal foods and avoid high-fructose corn syrup... it’s in everything!
I can only go by our experience and that of our friends with similar issues. Changing the diet changes the child. That doesn’t mean it affects all children the same way. We have many friends who seem to subsist on real “junk food” just fine. But if you have children somewhere on the autism spectrum, diet is very important to controlling its effects.
I personally believe that the autism manifestation is mainly just a different way of being... it’s not a problem, really. Your doctors need to be able to focus like a laser for hours at a time. You also need those people who can focus on multiple things at once and thrive in what others find to be chaos (like pilots). I think I would be diagnosed on the autism spectrum by current standards. However, the degeneration of our diets is contributing to these people coming unglued and being disruptive in school and society.
Just my experience and opinion.
As much as I would love to think there was not a financial incentive, I can’t help but think we were ignored because there was no money in it.
But I believe we have become worse at helping the ASD problem, especially in the realm of my case. I was easily “fixed”. If there was money in it, where would I be? I hate to think.
My experience with the full-blown autism cases like Muggs mentions is that we spend all our time trying to keep them quiet instead of realizing their potential. People like Muggs grandson may have been the great artists and poets prior to 1900.
The abilities of autistic people I have known borders on the supernatural. A 6 year-old who can exactly replicate an Elmers Glue bottle without looking at it. A kid on my son’s football team who can’t line up as a wide-receiver properly but can rattle off all NFL stats for the last 8 years.
