The Newtown shooting led gun-control advocates to try the same failed strategies again. And once again, they didn't work.
After the school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, many in the American media insisted that the tragedy should prompt a "conversation about gun control." These articles were written as if there had never been such a conversation. In fact, the issue had been debated for decades. Given the results, I argued, there was no reason to presume that a new conversation would end in more gun control.
That conversation has now come and gone. The result?
"Perverse as it may sound, the horrific mass shooting in December 2012 at Sandy Hook Elementary produced a burst of state-level gun control bills around the country and then triggered a much stronger pro-gun backlash," Paul M. Barrett reports at Businessweek. "The counter-reaction has now reached its apogee in Georgia. In the past year alone, 21 states have enacted laws expanding gun rights, according to the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence. Several states added piecemeal provisions allowing firearms on college campuses or in bars or churches. Georgias politicians, egged on by the National Rifle Association, have gone for broke."
He goes on to offer advice to gun-control advocates:
The smart response is not scorn or exaggeration...

Americans win again.
Funny stuff, and in the Atlantic.
Too bad we’ve not been this strong on morality issues, the issues God is judging us for.
The NRA sure as hell isn’t winning in New Jersey!
Scorn and exaggeration is the only response Liberals know.
“In the aftermath of a gun tragedy, there isn’t anything wrong with proponents of gun control trying to persuade Americans to change their position in light of what happened.”
Why is it that idiots like this will NEVER change their position, REGARDLESS OF FACTS.
I know, why don’t we try this:
- Eliminate most laws regarding gun ownership and purchase.
- In fact, let’s allow guns to be sold through mail order.
- Let’s have most adult males that severed in the military be allowed to bring back their military weapon and keep it fully loaded and unlocked at all times.
- Let’s get rid of all metal detectors and police officers at schools.
Wait a minute - that’s the environment I grew up in the 1950’s. Since guns were even MORE available then - there must have been a school shooting every day!
Except there wasn’t.
And even though we have much more strict gun laws, police and metal detectors in schools - we still keep having such events. So if somebody actually wanted to ‘change their position in light of what happened’ they would come to realized that guns had nothing to do with it. If they did, the ‘50s would have been a blood bath.
But it is better to try to keep the focus on guns, rather than have the sheeple discover the truth. And the truth is, the more and more liberal ideas are accepted in our society, the more dangerous and hopeless our society becomes.
And that’s the REAL cause of what is happening today.
Let us not leave out prevarication.
Too bad we didn’t have an NRA version for climate control or economic policies.
Is "egged on" ever used in regard to anything but a wicked act? I've never heard it used any other way. No bias here.
Gun grabbers are not unlike pacifists. They are true believers. They are impervious to logic and facts. You may as well argue with glalal warming alarmists.
“- In fact, lets allow guns to be sold through mail order.”
In the early ‘60’s you could walk into K-Mart or Sears and buy a hand gun. No wait. I don’t know if they took your driver’s license info, but I doubt it. I do remember buying .22LR ammo as a kid and they required my DL and entered it in a book I had to sign. I recall an episode on Dragnet where somebody was shot with a .38, so they went around and looked at all the ammo logs and caught the guy. What a laugh.
The NRA sure as hell isnt winning in Connecticut!
The NRA wasn’t involved in most of these fights. It chooses its battles carefully. What came out, not after Newtown, but after several insane people killed others, was very obvious to objective observers.
1) The left, very cynically, stated that it intended to use those tragedies to advance part of its agenda, that being gun control. They actually said this in public, and the public response was some level of disgust, but not support.
In effect it said, “We don’t care that these children were butchered. We only care about our profiting from their loss.”
2) This cynicism and lack of intellectualism was front and center as they argued for gun control. At times they blatantly lied, stated that up was down and night was day, and just expected the public to buy it. Arguing against them, the people who support gun liberty always tried to be very accurate in their facts.
3) Underlying events, such as black on white crime, absolutely hurt the gun control arguments. Even black on black crime is so random and extreme that the public wants to be able to defend itself. Hypocrites like Bloomberg, who wants to protect himself but not for other people to be protected, was the icing on the cake.
Repugnant and repulsive people are not good advocates.
The current answer to them is
“Leland Yee. San Francisco Democrat. Gun control advocate and major gun runner.”
“In the early 60s you could walk into K-Mart or Sears and buy a hand gun.”
In 1964 my Dad said if I made all B’s or higher, I could buy a pistol. I made B’s, and bought my first gun. An Astra 9mm purchased mail order through a company called Service Armament.
I filled out the order slip and went to a small local food store to use my hard earned money to buy a money order ($24.38). When I got ready to send in the order, I began to wonder if being 15 years old would be a problem, so my Dad signed his name along the margin of the order blank.
I still have the gun, the box and shipping envelope it came in. Addressed to me, at the home I grew up in.
Did I sneak it school to show off to all my friends - hell no! Back then every home was equipped with this person called ‘Dad’ who was not shy with a belt. There might have been a gun and ammunition sitting on the top shelf of my closet - but you sure didn’t do anything stupid with it.
(And by the way, so much for what 15 year old kids know - that gun is a POS).
“(And by the way, so much for what 15 year old kids know - that gun is a POS).”
Don’t feel bad. At 55 I bought a Kahr 9mm. It will only fire a few brands of 9mm Luger. It turns out 9mm comes as 1”1/16” and 1”3/16”. All my other guns are fine with both. Not the Kahr. I cycle every round through it before putting it away to make sure they’ll feed. It cost $550.
They can sweep out all the communists if the 400,000 hunters in the state ALL go to the poles in November and vote them ALL out.
New Jersey isn’t really part of the USA, or shouldn’t be anyway. Maybe the tides will rise from global warming and we wont have to talk about it any more because of the new ocean front in Philly.
Your gun uses 9x19mm Luger nothing else. You probably bought 9×18mm Makarov.
9mm short 380, 9x18 mak, 9x19 luger, 9mm x21 largo, 9mmx23
along some other more obsolete 9mm
Lots of choices make the correct one
