Worlds Iconic Landmarks To Go Dark For Earth Hour
March 29, 2014 4:59 PM
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) If you happen to notice some of New York Citys famous landmarks go dark Saturday night, dont be alarmed.
Its all a part of a global initiative to bring awareness to our impact on the Earth.
This evening, people around the world will observe Earth Hour by turning off their lights between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. local time.
Keya Chatterjee, of the World Wildlife Fund told 1010 WINS there has been major progress in conservation.
In the last 18 months there have been more solar panels installed in the United States than in the previous 30 years. So were seeing a real trend, Chatterjee said.
Those participating are asked to take the time to contemplate the Earths environment.
Earth Hour is a moment to kind of celebrate that trend and think about how we can switch the way we use electricity, Chatterjee added.
Nearly all of the worlds major landmarks and iconic buildings will also take part. Chinas Birds Nest Stadium, the Great Wall of China, the pyramids in Egypt, the Eiffel Tower, and Big Ben will all go dark at the same time.

Holy cow!
I almost missed it.
Again.
I really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, look forward to this every year, and it still sneaks up on me.
It's the only day of the year when I literally have every indoor and outdoor light on my property on simultaneously, for a whole hour. Also non-motorized appliances. Except motorized or heating element appliances; that doesn't compute.
I can smile at a small pleasure for a whole hour again...
Thanks for the reminder. 7 minutes to dark time here in Florida. That gives me enough time to start the dishwasher and washing machine, put something in the microwave, and run upstairs to turn on the lights and ceiling fans.
I will be turning on all my lights especially the incandescent ones in celebration
Remember this! To fight poverty and hunger! How did it work out!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hands_Across_America
“Hands Across America was a benefit event and publicity campaign staged on Sunday, May 25, 1986 in which approximately 6.5 million people held hands in a human chain for fifteen minutes along a path across the continental United States. Many participants donated ten dollars to reserve their place in line; the proceeds were donated to local charities to fight hunger and homelessness and help those in poverty”
Lights out is just another feel good do nothing publicity stunt.
I am currently listening to Trace Adkins’ Every Light in the House is On.
LOL, I actually forgot that one! There’s even a part 2, unbelievable. Donna the Deer lady. My GF was laughing so hard when she viewed it..
The really scary part is that those people are *out there*, and they vote and breed...
