"Naqibullah, a policeman in Tani district of Khost, opened fire on two foreign journalists. One was killed and one was wounded," a spokesman for the governor of Khost province, Mobariz Zadran, told Reuters.

According to an AP freelancer who witnessed the attack, the two had arrived in the heavily guarded district compound before the incident:

As they were sitting in the car waiting for the convoy to move, a unit commander named Naqibullah walked up to the car, yelled "Allahu Akbar" — God is Great — and opened fire on them in the back seat with his AK-47. He then surrendered to the other police and was arrested.

Regressing from what, exactly?

Most likely back to what it was before the Afgan war.

In a post yesterday I remarked that our country was, for the most part, law abiding. I also said that lawlessness existed in some places...and my example was Afghanistan.

The lawlessness there hasn't much to do with their faith or with their economy, but it has to do with the structure of their government, their laws and their family clans.

It is an abysmally sad situation for all, especially for the weaker members of the society. That would be the poorer families and the families with the least amount of status. It doesn't have much to do with women, per se because their status is inexorably linked to their family.

Exactly. How far can you regress from the Stone Age?

I personally think it was a horrendously bad idea to send a female media member to that country. It is hopelessly lawless.

The folks who sent her had to be aware of the misogynist attitude of too many people over there. That attitude can be strong in both genders.

Her bosses seemed to have no idea whatsoever that their female reporter would have any problems, which shows their abysmal ignorance of Afghanistan society.

My prayers are for the dead journalist and the family.

How, exactly. as America improved Afghanistan? What substantive and long lasting changes have been made?

The female journalist is not without some culpability in her own death.

If you want to play games on the interstate you can, but expect some team members to be run down from time to time. This time it was her turn.

The phrase “Being at the wrong place at the wrong time” refers to ever being anyplace in Afghanistan.

I think Jesus summed it up for us: Render unto Caesar's what is Caesar's. Render unto God what is God's.
It seems hopelessly simple, but then that decision really is, isn't it?

In the end this life is truly a short span of moments but eternity lasts a bit longer so why not live for that reality?

But. . .but. . .but. . .don’t they know freedom of the press is like a protective shield. . .especially when a journalist is a female bringing enlightenment to the ignorant? Don’t they know that? Besides, aren’t all journalists multiculturalists and therefore should celebrate our diversity and honor their culture and not send a female into such an area as that is culturally insensitive? Don’t they know that?

Prayers for family and friends.

Afghanistan made the most progress back when the West was sure of itself instead of apologizing for itself. And Bush's rhetoric about the "religion of peace" did not help either. America inflicted a constitution on Afghanistan that made Sharia the highest law of the land (when the backlash against the Taliban was strongest!). photo KabulUnivcirca19601.png US Soldiers with Afghan Police women, 2011 photo ZabulProvAfghanistanFemaleAfghanpoliceWengagementteam1.jpg photo Afghanistan1960sScouting1.jpg

One thing I do remember was that the Americans allowed the girls and women to go to school.
