Three Jews Among Those Killed in Ukraine Uprising
Forward ^ | March 18, 2014 | Paul Berger

Balaclava-clad far-right paramilitaries fire into the air at the funeral in Ukraine of an anti-government protestor. This is not a tribute to a fellow right-wing nationalist, but to a Jewish construction worker, Alexander Scherbanyuk.

Of the approximately 100 people killed during the protests in Kiev that swept Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich from power in February, three were Jews, according to Vyacheslav Likhachev, a Ukrainian anti-Semitism expert.

The same day, snipers in Kiev killed two more Jewish anti-government protesters, Josef Shiling, a 61-year-old construction worker from Drogobych and Evgeniy Kotlyar, a 33-year old ecological activist from Kharkiv. Each of the three men, whom the Ukrainians consider as martyrs to their revolution, were known by their local Jewish communities, Likachev said.

But, but, but, Ukranians are Nazis! And Putin the KGB dictator is defending freedom and Christianity by invading a sovereign nation using special forces cutthroats without insignia. The Ukranians are exterminating Jews and Russians and puppies as we speak, Russia Today and Alex Jones told me so.

What religion were the 97 killed?

Given that Jews are 0.2% of the population of Ukraine (i.e. 2 out of every 1000), and 3 out of 100 demonstrators killed were Jewish, you could say that Jews were highly over-represented among the dead. Heck, Yanukovich was telling his underlings that that the Maidan demonstrations were a Jewish plot, while calling the demonstrators Nazis.

So we don’t know what religion the 97% of the dead were.

And the Prime Minister of Ukraine is also a Jew. Conveniently ignored by some who would prefer to label the ‘Kiev regime’ as neo-Nazis and Banderists.

“What religion were the 97 killed?”

Almost all were - if they held to any religion at all - Catholic or Ukrainian Orthodox.

You tell a few things by their place or origin and their names: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_people_killed_during_Euromaidan

We don’t know what their religion is.

“We don’t know what their religion is.”

Almost all were baptized Catholics or Eastern Orthodox. At least one apparently a Muslim. There might have been some Ukrainian Baptists as well.

I believe that you are merely speculating on the individuals participating in the riots, and don’t actually know what those 97 people’s religion or non-religion was?

It’s confusing, because you sound like you know, and that those individual’s lives have been looked into to answer this question, is that the case?

We don’t know. Likely nobody knows. Just knowing about Ukrainians in general, the majority at least considers themselves Orthodox (either Ukrainian or Russian) or Catholic (a couple of varients) with a few Protestants (mostly Baptists.)

So we’re talking statistically, not imperical knowledge.

Ukraine and Kiev, but rioters and revolutionaries are not always simply reflections of the normal religious demographics.

We just don’t know, and no one cares, the article is about 3 men who died.

If you have information to the contrary, post it. Otherwise, what I have said stands because it is based on common sense.

“It’s confusing, because you sound like you know, and that those individual’s lives have been looked into to answer this question, is that the case?”

Yes, I know, and the lives of the dead have been looked into. I know - based on common sense and a great deal of knowledge about the region and its peoples - that the vast majority, almost all, of the dead were Catholic or Orthodox. If you have proof to the contrary, post it.

You will fail to do so, of course.

We also don’t know the composition of the peaceful protestors, and how many of them chose to remain when the shooting started.

That isn’t the way it works, you are claiming to know the religion or non-religion, of 97 individuals.

I’m merely doubting that you know that, I would like to see the list of those individuals by their religious beliefs.

I agree with you, I would be surprised if that list has been compiled.

Appreciating your curiosity, when all is done, what relevance is their religious makeup?
