[Cat 5] Cyclone Ita shows no sign of weakening as it heads for north Queensland

The Bureau of Meteorology says Cyclone Ita, the category-five system bearing down on the far north Queensland coast, is showing no signs of weakening.

The weather bureau says Ita has slowed down as it heads towards the coast and should make landfall between Cape Flattery and Cooktown around midnight.

The bureau says the cyclone has very destructive winds of up to 300 kilometres per hour near the core.

Cooktown resident Ivan Juff says locals are nervous but he has decided to stay put.

"I've seen what Cyclone Larry and all those did, and this is up there with them ... (but) I live here. I'm not going anywhere else," he said.

"All the council blokes, they've all got families and houses and that too and they'd be in the same boat as me.

"They're worried about the whole show. We'll get through it."

The weather bureau says the cyclone is the most severe system it has seen approach the Queensland coast since Cyclone Yasi in 2011.

It warns that the Cassowary Coast could receive up to 300 millimetres of rain every six hours for several days after Ita hits.

At noon (AEST) the system, which has already wreaked havoc in the Solomon Islands, was estimated to be 175 kilometres north-north-east of Cooktown and 330 kilometres north of Cairns, and moving south-west at 10kph.

A cyclone warning is current for coastal areas from Cape Sidmouth to Innisfail, including Cooktown, Port Douglas and Cairns, and extending inland to areas including Kalinga, Palmerville, Mareeba and Chillagoe.

A nurse my wife taught in Chiang Mai lives in Cairns. My wife tried to call her but hasn’t gotten through yet. Hopefully they are hunkering down but as she’s a nurse she’s likely at work.

Most people in Cairns are very nice. One guy gave me a ride from one end of the town to the other, with all my luggage as I was waiting for a bus, just to be hospitable. G’Day Mate!

They think some areas could be without power for a month. I hope your wife’s friend doesn’t live/work in any of those places.

It isn’t the winds that break windows, - barring a direct strike - it’s the pressure gradients that cause windows to bust. Well, and small objects going airborne.

It’s going to help keep his windows intact while he’s in a saferoom or underground.

Cat 5? I don’t think it will just be small objects that go airborne.

Glass is literally liquid. If your tape job keeps the wind from attacking the glass such that a ‘melting’ point is created somewhere in the pane, you keep your window.

I always thought it was so that when the glass broke, it would stay more or less together and you’d have fewer fragments scattered around.

I knew you were pullin’my leg.

Glass is neither a liquid — supercooled or otherwise — nor a solid. It is an amorphous solid — a state somewhere between those two states of matter.

have you ever been in hurricane force wind ?

http://www.weatherimagery.com/blog/tape-windows-hurricane/

Sometimes you will see homeowners tape their windows with masking or duct tape in preparation for a hurricane. The fact is, tape will do nothing to help preserve your windows, protect your home, or prevent them from shattering. It’s simply a waste of effort and time that could of been spent doing better things preparing for the hurricane’s arrival.
