New York Student Suspended for “Insubordination,” aka Opposing Common Core
Rightwing News ^ | 4/11/14 | Duane Lester

We’re told that there’s nothing to worry about when it comes to Common Core. If that’s true, what’s with the intimidation and the punishment for those who oppose it:

A 13-year-old student at Orange-Ulster BOCES believes she was suspended from school this week as a result of telling other students they didn’t have to take the Common Core English test Tuesday.

The girl, eighth-grader Seirra Olivero, was suspended for two days for insubordination.

While she acknowledges the charge, she contends in a complaint filed with the district that she felt bullied by three administrators because she told other students they didn’t have to take the test.

Her mother, Carin Beauchesne of Sparrowbush, said Thursday that she felt her daughter had done what students are told to do when they’re being bullied.

“She walked away! She felt she was being treated like a criminal. She’s a 13-year-old girl. What would you do?”

William Hecht, Orange-Ulster BOCES’s superintendent, said the girl’s complaint, which was filed under the state’s Dignity for All Students Act, was being taken seriously.

He said it was against school policy to discipline students for opting out of the controversial test, and that Seirra’s suspension came as the result of her refusing to obey the administrators.

He declined any further comment on the matter.

In her complaint, Seirra says that on Tuesday morning, the day of the test, she told a student he didn’t have to take the test if he didn’t want to. A teacher told her to “shut my mouth and keep walking.”

Is it just me or is that something you’d expect to hear from a prison guard?

But then, they don’t call it the school to prison pipeline for nothing.

This girl lives in Sparrowbush, NY We lived just down the road. So much for all that anti-bullying propaganda, that's another bunch of BS. Here's hoping this young lady's parents succeed in a killer lawsuit against the school district.

The no bullying rule doesn’t apply to the bullies who make the rules.

Whether or not Common Core is a good or bad thing, I’m not comfortable with the idea that students can simply blow off school tests when they object to them. Is that really what conservatives want?

Remember, we don't have a Department of Education, we have a Ministry of Reeducation.

When I was younger the charge against a student of “insubordination” was a blanket charge because a teacher just didn’t like a student (even if that student was justified in objecting to an absurd command or request).

Yes. Especially when the test is not authorized by the constitution. The Federal Government has no constitutional authority to regulate education.

I guess I’m not, and I guess students’ running amok in school, only obeying the rules they personally like is the what conservatives really want these days.

Then take it up in the political process. Don’t tell children they don’t have to follow any rules they don’t like. American public education is already a free-for-all disaster enough as it is. Other countries and cultures teach children to respect and obey their teachers. In general, I don’t think that is a bad thing.

Now that’s just too funny.... imagine rebelling against something you know is inherently wrong and against your “core”. Ha ha... I remember the ‘60’s and didn’t the other side do the same??? Shoe is on the other foot now....

Common Core is a federal invention. The federal government has no business messing with education.

Stories such as this one are useful to the extent that they sew disrespect for public education.

Insubordination? Sheesh. Schools are (or should be) stores where you purchase education. The students are customers. Can you imagine a Target shopper being accused of insubordination?

Everything I see these days makes me think of the new Captain America movie.

The rule is that the student doesn’t have to take the test. That rule was developed from the political process. So you can take your erroneous and insulting generalizations and your support shills and go back to DU.

Common Core is being used in about 3/4 of the school districts in Texas.

I guess you missed this part: "He said it was against school policy to discipline students for opting out of the controversial test..."

She didn't "blow off" the test. She opted out (which is her right) and told other students they could, as well. That was her sin to the school's eyes.

Im inclined to agree with you as well. While I try to educate my children on the ills of government I shield them from the activist side. Sometimes its just best to let kids be kids and not fill their heads with the terrors we feel are coming. Civil disobedience is for me an adult subject. I wouldnt use my child as a tool to get my point across. Its akin to liberal rat scum repeating the line it’s for the children. Its like I tell my kids, free speech end when you cross the threshold to my front door. Likewise you show respect to elders and those appointed to teach you unless illegal. If a parent doesnt like it enroll your child in another school but for gods sake dont use your child as a tool.
