Cliven Bundy Ranch Dispute: Huge Difference Between Coverage by Conservative and Liberal Me
The Epoch Times ^ | 04/11/2014 | Zachary Stieber

Posted on 04/11/2014 3:47:38 PM PDT by BuckeyeTexan

The Cliven Bundy ranch dispute has gained a lot of attention but is getting hugely different coverage from conservative and liberal media outlets.

Bundy is involved in a dispute with federal authorities over cattle grazing northeast of Las Vegas in Nevada.

He says that he has the right to graze his cattle on open range, which currently includes a portion of desert that houses the endangered desert tortoise. His right comes from his Mormon family settling and ranching in the area since the 19th century, he says.

Federal authorities say that cows are trespassing on the arid and fragile habitat and note that Bundy lost federal court cases challenging the roundup and that he was ordered by a federal judge last October not to interfere in any roundup.

Bundy, who represented himself in the court cases, has vowed to do whatever it takes to protect his property. He has characterized the dispute as a “range war.”

Conservative outlets such as Fox News, the Blaze, and InfoWars are highlighting Bundy’s argument and claiming that the government is overreaching with armed federal agents and use of force in the case.

“Nevada Rancher Threatens ‘Range War’ Against Government,” reads one Fox headline. “Cliven Bundy Calls on Sheriff to Start Arresting BLM Feds” reads another article, from InfoWars.

Liberal outlets, meanwhile, are painting Bundy as a lawbreaker who deserves what he’s getting and playing down any use of force.

“The federal government moved some cows and Nevada’s governor isn’t happy about it,” read one headline from the Washington Post. “Cliven Bundy: right-wing extremist domestic terrorist lawbreaker,” reads another article, from Daily Kos.

See an update from The Associated Press that seems to illustrate both sides below.

I don’t care anymore about who is right or wrong under the law. If they don’t have to live under it then why should I? All I know is that I hate these scumbag fed thugs so much I want to invite them to a red wedding.

“The most complete data is from the Beaver Dam Mountains. Woodbury and Hardy reported a tortoise population density of 150 per square mile in 1948. BLM reduced cattle grazing a few years later and eliminated cattle in 1970. Coombs reported a tortoise density of 39 per square mile in 1974. In these 26 years cattle use was reduced 100 percent and tortoise numbers were reduced 74 percent.

“These tortoises were doing so poorly a veterinarian, Dr. Jarchow, was consulted. He reported all six specimens were suffering from osteoporosis caused by a protein deficiency in their diet. Dr. Jarchow examined five specimens from the same mountains that shared their range with cattle. He reported these specimens were all healthy and well nourished.

“The historical record proves conclusively that tortoise thrive when cattle are on the range with them and without cattle grazing they are always malnourished and unhealthy and their numbers plummet.

Yeah, but your facts are wrong. The state doesn’t own the land and Bundy paid grazing fees for years to the federal government (BLM) not the state.

You are citing Bundy's claim which has not been supported by the courts. The courts have held:

As this court previously ruled in United States v. Bundy, Case No. CV-S-98-531-JBR (RJJ) (D. Nev. Nov. 4, 1998), “the public lands in Nevada are the property of the United States because the United States has held title to those public lands since 1848, when Mexico ceded the land to the United States.”

I believe that he does own 160 acres, for the remainder, he has held grazing rights for the public lands, which he does not own. The BLM thinks the plight of the Desert Tortoise trumps his grazing rights, hence the dispute

All of this was an interesting legal dispute until one each Harry Reid became interested in the land for solar farms to be built by Chinese companies represented by his son. He has gotten in Harry Reid's way, he has to go.

I don't think that the federal government has ceded very much of their lands in the West to the states excepting in small amounts for limited purposes. The feds own over 90% of the land in those states, so I don't think that Bundy has a legal land to stand on for his claim that Nevada owns the land. His case is stronger when it comes to the tortoise, especially since these solar farms are a known menace to wildlife, including the desert tortoise. They've been getting along with the cattle for quite some time.

This is political muscle in action. The law is there to let corrupt politicians do what they want.

Liberal outlets, meanwhile, are painting Bundy as a lawbreaker who deserves what he’s getting and playing down any use of force.

“Funny...I read the same line posted by some here on Free Republic.”

I noticed that, too. Some wobbly-kneed, so-called conservatives would have joined with the British Crown back in 1774 and insisted that the patriots who dumped tea into Boston Harbor be prosecuted.

Thanks for posting the background info on that. Last night someone was saying that the tortoises do better when they share habitat with cattle but didn't give a citation.

Looks like the BLM, Harry Reid and the FedMob in general are going to be brought down several pegs over this. The lights are on and there's nowhere for the cockroaches to run this time.

What makes you think they would go to the expense of providing you with a coffin ? We are talking about folks who in the 20th century had no qualms about standing men women & children at the edge of open mass graves & shooting them in the head.

Make no mistake the leftist in this country would gladly do so & after watching C-span 1,2 & 3 for more than 20 years I truly believe they would find a great many willing executioners in the various federal law enforcement organizations especially the FBI & the DHS who increasingly view the American citizen as an enemy of the state.
