Bush Urges Effort to Close Black and White Students’ Achievement Gap

AUSTIN, Tex. — Former President George W. Bush called the achievement gap between white and black children “a national scandal” on Thursday and urged both parties to come together to address it as the central civil rights issue of the modern era.

Paying tribute to President Lyndon B. Johnson at a conference commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, Mr. Bush said the real test of the nation’s commitment to equality would be to fix an educational system that has tolerated low standards for too long.

“There’s a growing temptation among public officials in both political parties at the federal, state and local levels to lower expectations,” he told an audience. “Without meaningful accountability, it is poor and minority children who suffer most. The goal of ending achievement gaps should unite Republicans and Democrats, it should unite teachers and parents.” He added, “It is only right to blow the whistle on mediocrity.”

Mr. Bush’s speech concluded the three-day conference hosted by the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library, where three other presidents also commemorated the landmark antidiscrimination law of the Johnson era. Mr. Bush reached across the aisle to hail Johnson’s domestic achievements, including his commitment to education, and noted that he signed a law naming the Department of Education for him.

“Lyndon Johnson was continuing the work of Abraham Lincoln, which is really the work of the Declaration of Independence — ‘All men are created equal,’ ” Mr. Bush said. “He made us one people. I’ve got great respect for the way President Johnson used the presidency to achieve big goals. He understood the risks to his party and the risks to his coalition.”

That was what busing was supposed to do. All it did is make a longer day for the kids.

You can lead a person to knowledge, you cannot force them to learn it.

When you are pregnant at 13, you drop out. Gang bangers too

Hubby spent 20 yrs teaching JR College, ALL the Memphis City School grads A/B math average had to do REMEDIAL Math to do his electronics and computer science classes. The county and foreign students did not. Shelby CO did have a different school system. Memphis gave up their school charter, so they could force all the small towns to come under their control. Tiny Towns fought back, and won, they voted to form their own ED systems.

Memphis is 60%+ black 10-15% illegals, and 2% white approx numbers. It is the largest city in Shelby County, TN. They want control of the entire county. People once fled Memphis are now fleeing Shelby CO.

I’ve read TN Recidivism report, blacks do 6 months less time, occupy more beds, that report is now a decade or more old.

Current for the 11 month 29 day Penal Farm in Memphis is 85% RECIDIVISM RATE! MOSTLY BLACK. IT IS SO OVER CROWDED THEY SERVE 3 MONTHS, MOSTLY WINTER OR WHEN A HEALTH NEED ARISES, MOST HAVE 40-50 CRIMINAL OFFENSES EACH.

‘YOUR HONOR, MY CLIENT IS NOT IN YOUR COURT ROOM TODAY, HE IS IN JUDGE’S ___________COURT ROOM.’ Public Defender, we paid for.

Honest to GOD I was there when it happened just this way. Bail was not revoked. 1 prep had 2 court rooms tied up. Judge 2 was not notified either. So you can guess bail was once more used.

We moved out of Shelby Co because of the crime, high taxes, and corrupt dem controlled areas of politics.

22 mile move taxes dropped, car ins, no wheel tax, nice friendly people both black and white. Kids don’t get into the kind of problems they do in Memphis. It is rightly called the cesspit of TN. Next to Nashville.

There’s an easy solution here... social grading. Like they do on many civil service exams for police and fire in the large cities. Equal outcomes, not racially disparate ones.

I can’t hear this sort of thing over and over without thinking of Murray’s “IQ Controversy.”

- Just paint, jump out of a plane with your father, be quiet and polite like our distant royal cousins across the pond, get a life, stop telling us what to do, - you giving food stamps to illegal aliens was stupid and spending our (OPM) money with your Fabian Socialist radical BS ideas

- Tell your idiot brother Jeb to go back to Mexico City and educate the Mexicans to get their druggie country squared away or we will -

A Republican bragging about LBJ??? Just wow.

W needs to come spend a week with my second grader and his class. Over half the class is taking mind altering meds. I have never seen so many drugged out children in elementary school as I have this year. Meds or no meds, it is a wonder that any learning at all occurs there.

“This is the inane conclusion one arrives at when you start with the wrong assumption.”

“So which teachers union do you belong to?”

None... but I can understand your confusion.

I admit my comment was a bit too subtle.

The assumption I was referring to is the one that says that all racial groups are the same and therefore differences in AVERAGE performance, (such as academic performance) among the racial groups is due to environmental factors and can be remedied with the “right” program.

The “Bell Curve” as well as a continent of real life empirical evidence strongly suggest that that assumption is false and that no changes in the “environment” will equalize AVERAGE performance, and attempts in that direction will only result in failure, perhaps even greater failure.

The past 50 years of all types of affirmative actions and special outreach programs with no closing of the performance gap (if anything those efforts have had the opposite effect), only strengthen the assertions of the “Bell Curve”.

This fact is truly a national tragedy because the problem cannot be addressed honestly and rationally due to the intractable political consequences.

Sure it can.

Intellectually cripple the smart segment of the student population so they perform as poorly as the dumb segment, which is what Communist Core is all about, just as I said.
