Latin America Is World's Most Violent Region (1/3 of global homicides)
Wall Street Journal ^ | April 11, 2014 | DAVID LUHNOW

MEXICO CITY—Latin America is the world's most violent region, accounting for nearly one in three global homicides, according to data from a new study by the United Nations.

Latin America racked up some 134,519 homicides in 2012, about 31% of the total for that year, according to a tally by The Wall Street Journal of the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime's Global Study on Homicide, its first since 2011. Yet the region's 574 million people comprise just 8% of the global population, according to U.N. figures.

As a whole, Latin America's per capita homicide rate is 23.4 per 100,000 people, nearly double the rate in Africa, which is sometimes mistakenly believed to be the most violent continent. Venezuela is the only country in the region with a consistently rising homicide rate since 1994, the report said.

Latin America as a region has the highest rate of criminal violence in the world," said Angela Me, the chief of research at the UNODC. "Yet parts of the region, like Chile and Argentina, have far lower homicide rates. The problem really is northern South America and Central America," including Mexico, she added.

The study tallied 440,000 homicides around the world during 2012, using mostly reports from law enforcement in member states. In some parts of Africa, the agency relied on estimates from the World Health Organization.

A combination of factors is to blame, said Alejandro Hope, a security expert at the Mexican Institute for Competitiveness, a think tank: weak law enforcement institutions, a vibrant illegal narcotics trade that led to a growth in organized crime, a culture of violence, economic inequality, and the region's chaotic urbanization of the past three decades, which created rings of slums around mega cities.

134,000 plus in 2012, really hard to fathom, Mexico with its drug war probably only accounts for 20,000 or so of those murders for one year I would think.

Venezuela, Honduras, Brazil of course, have a lot of violence, the crime rate in Argentina made the news this week.

How racist of the Mexican Institute for Competitiveness to blame a culture of violence for all that crime when we all know it is due to selfish white people who refuse to share the wealth . . . < / sarcasm >

Back in 1968, during the anti-gun hysteria, after the murder of bobby Kennedy, it was pointed out, in a letter to the editor, that MEXICO had more murders with knives than than the USA with guns.

The editor of a magazine poo-pooed this by saying the problem in MEXICO was “..the cult of MACHO, and we in the USA did not have that here.”

Well, now we do.

Well duh. Everybody knows that south of the border(I don’t mean the south side of chit-town either) to the tip of south American anyone can buy as many guns and as much ammo as they can carry with no background checks at every bodega on every street corner. Their guns laws are WAY much less restrictive than here. LOL! Well, that is if eric the red is supplying the guns. Then they’re free. s/off

I just finished reading a book about Simon Bolivar and his (3) revolutions in Central America to free that area from Spain. In the book it becomes clear that that area has been very violent for a long time. Indeed, the problem for Bolivar was all the internecine violence and race wars. It was virtually impossible to get the people to unite against anything, even against the corrupt Spain.
