EPA coal rules leaving US vulnerable to power blackouts?
Fox ^ | 4-12-14 | Mike Emanuel

Facing the Obama administration's so-called "war on coal," some utility officials are warning that fewer coal-fired power plants could leave the U.S. power system vulnerable to blackouts in the near future.

The officials warn that intense summer heat or extreme winter cold could soon be too much for the system to handle.

"I worry about the potential of brownouts and blackouts if we're ... actually depending on this generation that's going to be retired," Nick Akins, from American Electric Power, told Fox News in an interview.

Pro-coal advocates say the administration's focus on its environmental agenda challenges the reliability of the nation's power grid.

There’s no wacko like an eco-wacko where logic and common sense has taken a permanent vacation

when the blackouts start happening (and they WILL happen). Who do you think the liberals will blame? The environmental nutcases that caused this mess? or the “evil/greedy energy companies”?

Glad I put back the funds to upgrade our backup generator to a much larger, electric start model.

Fire up the coal burners. Run the coal trains. Look at how many Feds it takes to stop one guy from grazing cattle. Give the People a reason to fight!

Mitch McConnel has ads on during Rush every day pitching his I’m the savior of coal message into South East Kentucky a hundred miles to the north of the East Tennessee radio stations.

The ads are very good and deliver a strong message that incumbency has power. It is strange to be involved in Kentucky politics here.

This is frustrating, because it’s all about worshiping at the altar of mother earth and all that. I think the most extreme are in favor of rolling blackouts and brownouts. They want us to use less power to fight global warming. They don’t care about the fallout from their policies.

Welcome to the new paradigm.

Of course the Evil Power Companies (who refused to convert to pixie dust and unicorn poop as fuel sources) are to blame, EVERYBODY knows that!

And incidentally, they are all Republicans and funded by the Koch brothers.

It is no longer a matter of money to these people. Unless it is too much of somebody else’s money being spent the “wrong” way.

The sun's magnetic field is in decline...so less sunspots are formed...expect no new sunspots around 2016/2017.

We all going to need all that electricity when the next ice age kicks in at that time.

LoUQ - When every house has its own generator, will that lower CO2 emissions ?

But just in case get a generator or a solar system installed. :-)

This is believable. There are many times this winter I saw the MISO map reflect high power prices over the entire eastern US. That’s probably because of shutting down coal plants in the east instead of trying to meet new NOx standards.

Trying to have a conversation with a ‘tree hugger’ is truly the finest experience of wrestling with a pig.

I had this unfortunate experience last week, with my niece and her whacked out boyfriend. This generation is completely and utterly brainwashed. No amount of facts or honest questioning would move them off their position.

They sadly are hypocrites as are all mother earth worshipers. I say ship ‘em all to a 3rd world country and let them experience what living without is really all about.

Shutting down 25% of our generating capacity might endanger power reliability? Oh, come on. What a stupid thought. Of course it wouldn’t. Everybody knows power comes from the outlets on the wall. What does coal have to do with that?

Just like not building any serious new water infrastructure in California in 55 years would lead to water shortages after the population doubles. What a silly notion.

Eco-wackos with gubbermint jobs could care less. In fact they might be out of a job (theoretically) if they don't dream up more stupid eco-regulations that eff up your life and hobble our economy. Why would they care when they have that fat Federale paycheck rolling in every two weeks

Rule #1 in Washington DC is "It's all about gettin' paid"   and they don't get paid unless they over-regulate and ruin our power generating situation and other parts of our economy. They are few idealists in DC and 99% mercenaries who are out to get paid, and damn the American people

We have a war and its Washington DC vs the American people in flyover country
