Nevada Cattle Rancher Wins 'Range War' With Feds
abc ^ | April 12, 2014 | Liz Field

A Nevada cattle rancher appears to have won his week-long battle with the federal government over a controversial cattle roundup that had led to the arrest of several protesters.

Cliven Bundy went head to head with the Bureau of Land Management over the removal of hundreds of his cattle from federal land, where the government said they were grazing illegally.

Bundy claims his herd of roughly 900 cattle have grazed on the land along the riverbed near Bunkerville, 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas, since 1870 and threatened a "range war" against the BLM on the Bundy Ranch website after one of his sons was arrested while protesting the removal of the cattle.

"I have no contract with the United States government," Bundy said. "I was paying grazing fees for management and that's what BLM was supposed to be, land managers and they were managing my ranch out of business, so I refused to pay."

The federal government had countered that Bundy "owes the American people in excess of $1 million " in unpaid grazing fees and "refuses to abide by the law of land, despite many opportunities over the last 20 years to do so."

However, today the BLM said it would not enforce a court order to remove the cattle and was pulling out of the area.

"Based on information about conditions on the ground, and in consultation with law enforcement, we have made a decision to conclude the cattle gather because of our serious concern about the safety of employees and members of the public," BLM Director Neil Kornze said.

Well its not all bad for the BLM. They managed to kill about 130 head of cattle and dismantle at least some of the water infrastructure. Pretty sad.

“If it was a simple matter of non-payment of rent he would’ve lost in court over 19 years ago. He didn’t!”

I think you are being very inaccurate by inferring that Bundy never lost in court.

Can you show even one instance where he won in court ?

I ask because every case that has been cited with references shows that he lost in court, over and over again.

If someone can cite a decision in his favor on this issue, then I would be willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. But please don’t just make stuff up.

” The behind the scenes people are not good guys but are manipulative for selfish reasons. Your ‘self-indignation’ is toward the wrong people and wrong subject. The decisions come from an unlawful Obama Administration that you should be focusing on, and not some rancher out in Nevada.”

I am not willing to sell my soul to one devil just to get back at another.

God forbid someone steals from the thieves that stole and profited from the people who were raped to begin with.

Twisted, ain’t it?

The BLM told Bundy the same thing he was not allowed to keep his 900 or more cattle on the property anymore he was only allowed 150 Cows on the property BUT he had to pay the same fees.

BLM grazing fees are per animal unit month (AUM), about one-fourth or less of private AUM fees. The AUM fee is set annually. AUM grazing fees are not a mysterious concept to ranchers.

In 1993, the AUM went up and Bundy's 1984-1993 grazing permit expired. Under a new contract, the total fee, if Bundy had grazed 150 cattle on the Bunkerton allotment, would have been 150 x AUM. Bundy didn't graze 150 cattle.

Ah. BLM grazing contracts/permits provide that the holder can continue to renew them on the same property at the new AUM, provided the holder honored the terms and conditions of the old contract and permit, but that the BLM may place limits on the number of livestock grazing on the allotment based on a number of factors . . . such as so-called Endangered Species habitats.

Bundy has always lost in court.

None of this excuses the BLM's military response.

Incidentally, the BLM loses over $150 million a year administering the subsidized grazing program under which AUM is drastically below fair-market AUM and maintenance costs. Sounds like an efficient government program.

Minimal research is your friend, CBS. The Bundy family didn't move to the area until 1878.

"Bundy should pay money if his cattle is grazing on government land"

EVEN OLE WOODIE GUTHRIE SANG ABOUT IT.....

This land is YOUR land, this land is MY land
From California to the New York island
From the redwood forest to the Gulf Stream water
This land was made for you and me

Nobody livin' can ever stop me
As I go walkin' that freedom highway
Nobody livin' can ever make me turn back
This land is made for YOU and ME!

“Since then he has refused to pay the BLM what they are legally owed. The BLM works for the taxpayers (whether they do a good job or not is irrelevant) therefore by not paying BLM, Bundy is stealing from US taxpayers.”

You can xx-port this BS all you want... I guess.

My grandfather had a farm, 180 acres within what IS WICHITA Kansas today.

His deed was signed by president Grant...

They took it and now it’s part of the airport and a golf course.

He got nothing for it...

I don’t know. I copied nully’s HTML straight from his post and it looked good in preview. I didn’t post it but that shouldn’t make a difference. You can always highlight text or a graphic, right click on it, then click ‘view selection source.’ A new window will open with the source code of the object selected highlighted. Copy that and paste into a post composition page.

Well, you tried, old timer.

The feds never should have gone in there with the shock-and-awe campaign, heavily armed, snipers, tasers, choppers.

If nothing else this will help show good people what the minions of Obama and Reid are capable of, and how an effective resistance might be mounted.

But as to the details of Bundy’s contract, and the long history of the dispute, and his insistence on paying the county and such—there are too many versions and too much intensity to sort it all out right now.

I’m not a rancher but I live amongst ‘em and I hear more private-land ranchers gripe about the great deal the government-land-leasers get than anything else.

But those gripes, like anything else, are one side of the story. The real lesson from the Bundy situation is that it is increasingly difficult, costly and even dangerous to dance with the devil out of D.C.

"But please don’t just make stuff up."

The BLM could never get him off the land. If they had a clear court order to remove him over all those years they would've done so.

They did not get such till recently. And they still failed!

There is a hard rule in all Warfare if I still hold the ground at the end of the battle then I won.

Bundy has yet to be beaten. The Bundy's have grazed cattle on that land since 1887. And as of today they are still doing so.

Bottom line: Bundy's: 126 years BLM: 0

"Bundy has always lost in court."

Yet his cattle are still there. In fact by all accounts Bundy cattle have been on that land since 1887

Seems strange that someone who has never won in court still continues to win what he wants.

Some folks think we all live on stolen land.

That don’t mean stealing it again is right.

Sadly, you did not catch the irony of my post, have a good night.

And the folks we "stole" it from, stole it from somebody else.
