Sticker shock at the steak house; beef prices highest in 27 years

Edd Hendee reached into the chilled glass case containing cold cuts of steak, the classic Texas entrée upon which he built his restaurant and his fortune, proudly showing off his merchandise like a jeweler displaying his diamonds.

“This is a center cut filet,” he said. “It’s the very best filet you can possibly buy. And that’s why it’s expensive.”

And lately, at the Taste of Texas restaurant in west Houston, it’s become even more expensive.

“When the price goes from just under $20 a pound to us wholesale to almost $25 a pound, that’s almost a $5 increase in this steak to me,” Hendee said. “I had to pass some of that along to the customers.”(continued)

does anyone have a good recipe for night crawlers?

Anything tastes good with black bean sauce and onions... some Golden Mountain Sauce, diced ginger and garlic, and maybe a touch of sugar.

If you want it spicy, throw in a little Sriracha hot chile sauce.

Serve with hot tea and gummy rice.

The secret to good sauerkraut is to cook it long and slow with pork, Apple chunks, couple tablespoons of brown sugar and caraway seeds.

My mother calls that Bavarian style. It's also good with real Polish sausages.

Have to agree with you there. I’ve never had a cut of Ranchers Reserve that wasn’t excellent. That’s why I try to hit it up a couple times a week, if finances allow. When I found that little section, I was ECSTATIC, cause I hadn’t bought any beef for a while. My hubby was quite happy too! I’ve been using ground turkey for so long my kids would think taco’s made with beef taste funny!
