GOP stars steer clear of Nevada ranch fight
The Hill ^ | 04/17/2014 | Timothy Cama

GOP presidential hopefuls are largely steering clear of Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy’s fight with the federal government.

The showdown, which left armed militia members and feds staring each other down last week, has captivated talk radio and cable news shows, turning Bundy into a conservative cause célèbre.

Yet Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and Mike Huckabee, a former Arkansas governor and 2008 presidential candidate, are the only big-name Republicans to have spoken out on the dispute so far. Tea Party favorite Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) has been silent, and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) have also not commented on Bundy, who has been fighting the federal government in and out of court for more than 20 years over his refusal to pay cattle grazing fees.

All three offices did not respond to calls for this story.

GOP strategists suggested that Bundy’s case is too risky for most candidates eyeing the presidency, particularly given the possibility of armed conflict with federal police.

“The Republican Party’s very sympathetic to Cliven Bundy’s property rights, states’ rights argument,” said strategist Ford O’Connell, who worked on John McCain’s 2008 campaign. “But many Republicans also prize the rule of law above all else. Right or wrong, Bundy had his day in court and lost.”

Matt Mackowiak, who has worked on various Capitol Hill campaigns and as a congressional press secretary, agreed that candidates have good reason to be cautious in the Bundy dispute.

“If you don’t know the person, and you haven’t followed the situation closely, all you do is you look at the situation and see risk,” Mackowiak, who contributes to The Hill's Pundits Blog, said.

Still, Bundy’s arguments and the battle on his ranch feed into a strain of the GOP worried about what it sees as a growing incursion

Again with the “armed militia members”. I guess the SWAT team was there to put flowers in the barrels of their guns.

They better not steer clear. Bundy Ranch is going to bring Reid down once all the leads are followed. I am on to a bunch of hot stuff. Reid’s consigliere Jay Brown and Utah bribe allegations can become radioactive. I’ve updated the following page.

Dax to the top.

But on the subject of the title of this thread, which is that DC GOP politicians haven't leapt to the defense of Mr. Bundy...

The DC GOP doesn't want the conservative smallfolk getting the mistaken notion that they're different from their Democratic colleagues.

:-)

“GOP stars steer clear of Nevada ranch fight”

They don’t want to be seen as conected to old-school, gun toting constitutionalists out in the hinterlands.

Yes indeed - was posted all by its lonesome on a thread by another Freeper. It has references, docs, maps, the whole deal. Good illustration of how lawfare is used to beat citizens out of money, land and mineral rights.

I thought he hadn't paid normal fees going way back. Not true?"

From what I gather, he has not paid.

However....

If his situation is similar to that faced by Wayne Hage in NV a few years ago, he is not required to.

But it took years in court, and a lot of bucks, for Hage to win his case....and the Gov't continues to appeal their loss and have not paid a dime of their $14 Million judgement.

Researching the situation has taught me much. My time spent on it has irritated my wife, but it has surely toughened my resolve for what must come.

It is well worth your time...look for interviews with Wayne Hage (deceased now) and lectures by Stephen Pratt on the Constitution and original intent. Lots of other sources, but those are a very good start.

I never listen to CNN. I haven't had cable television in more than 15 years.

It’s my impression that Mr. Bundy’s hands are not perfectly clean in this, which is unfortunate.

Can you help us out with some facts to substantiate that aspersion?

From what I have read it seems the media has already dug into, and reported on, the most detailed minutia about Bundy and his position on the issue.
In just a few weeks we have learned more from the media about Cliven Bundy's background than they have reported on Barack Obama in five years.
I don't know if they have already dug trough his garbage like they did with Sarah Palin but if not you can bet they will be on it pretty soon.

The catalyst for the BLM's current aggression seems to be related to the nearby construction of a solar power field that Harry Reid's son is involved in.

Below is some info on an incriminating document that the BLM has purged from their web site.

They (the BLM) do not want to the solar plant to be constructed on the land Bundy uses ("Gold Butte").
Rather, they want the land Bundy uses to mitigate (offset) other land they will free up for construction of the Dry Lake Solar power project.

Specifically, look at the 8th "dotted" item:

(“Non-Governmental Organizations have expressed concern that the regional mitigation strategy for the Dry Lake Solar Energy Zone utilizes Gold Butte as the location for offsite mitigation for impacts from solar development, and that those restoration activities are not durable with the presence of trespass cattle")

You can link to the cached scrubbed document here:

I wasn’t on board with the ENN connection because it wasn’t at Dry Lake. The Liberty Unyielding article connects Dry Lake to First Solar and its political connections.

But there is a problem with ENN. Rory Reid does have a conflict of interest in that he represented ENN and voted for amendments to the Clark County MSHCP. MSHCP deals with mitigation actions which benefit ENN and other developers.

The "m" word - mitigation. One of the more treacherous tools in their toolbox used in the destruction of private property rights. Citizens far and wide need to catch on to just how that works and who it works for so that they don't get blindsided with that "save the environment" trojan horse BS. The very survival of small communities will depend on such awareness and a readiness to oppose it.

I agree that Bundy’s no longer the issue. Fedthuggery is the issue.
