Lessons learned on Bay of Pigs anniversary

Fifty-three years ago, my father had a meeting on the other side of town in Havana where we lived at the time. Cuba was in turmoil and opposition to Castro was widespread as more and more people saw communists in positions of responsibility.

At mid-morning, my dad called my mom and told her that something was happening in Cuba. Our phone kept ringing as friends and neighbors spread the news.

Humberto Fontova recalls the events of that day:

""Freedom is our goal!" roared commander Pepe San Roman to the men assembled before him 48 years ago this week. “Cuba is our cause! God is on our side! On to victory!” Fifteen hundred men crowded before San Roman at their Guatemalan training camps that day. The next day they’d embark for a port in Nicaragua, and the day after that would be bound for a landing site in Cuba named Bahia De Cochinos. We know it as the Bay of Pigs.

Their outfit was Brigada 2506, and at their commander’s address the men (and boys, some as young as 16) erupted. A scene of total bedlam unfolded. Hats flew. Men hugged, sang, cheered, and wept. The hour of liberation was nigh – and these men, all volunteers, were putting their lives on the line to see their dream of a free Cuba fulfilled.

The Brigada included men from every social strata and race in Cuba. There were sugar cane planters and cutters, aristocrats and their chauffeurs. Mostly, they hailed from somewhere in between, fitting for a nation with a larger middle class than most of Europe.

"They fought like Tigers," wrote CIA officer Grayston Lynch, who helped train these Cuban freedom-fighters. "But their fight was doomed before the first man hit the beach."

Connecting the Bay of Pigs to the Cuban missile crisis to Ukraine and who knows what comes next

IIRC, the skinny was that the CIA was mucho pissed at Kennedy's desertion of support at the Bay of Pigs invasion.

So, in retrospect, how cannot this historical event be a corollary with Obama’s impotent inaction with respect to the Ukraine and Crimea today? Both are clear examples of political cowardice coupled with ineptitude.

During the Cold War, we turned our backs on the Hungarians, the Cubans, the Vietnamese, and almost on our own people in Iran. I would say it’s a miracle we won, but now I’m not so sure we did.

“...political cowardice coupled with ineptitude.”

This can properly be the epitaph for the “O” administration.

It may have been a documented failure in Kennedy’s political career (one or two others come to mind)...but for “O”, it is THE pattern and an absolute defautl style.

This is what you get when you elect a guy who has NO connection to America, either practically or emotionally.

“O” makes it up as he goes along... doing his contrived, calculated and self-conscious Hollywood simulation of what he perceives leadership to be.

That is, ‘leadership’ ... only as it may be understood within the narrow limits of his stunted and dated ideology.

I agree. The boy president is a Muslim, born and bred. His formative years (what psychologists INSIST are THE developmental imperative, BTW) were as the child of a MUSLIM in Indonesia educated in a Muslim madrassa, later the son of a crazy ass white woman with some obvious loose screws.

There is nothing American about him.

Lesson #1; When you promise air support , give air support.

Right.

American culture is not perfect and it is NOT inimitable.

You can do one of two things with it. You can ape it or you can hate it outright. You can't be indifferent to it.

I think people hate it because it has an amazing ability to displace and overwrite other cultures. That's another story in itself...

Anyway, “O” (and his corner) took the second path... they became adepts in the ‘I hate America’ reaction to our culture.

With this group of people (and it's a big club), it's amazing to observe their adroit progression from ‘I hate America’ to becoming the most successful and efficient beneficiaries of American largess!!!

That one of them should be the President of the United States is miraculous and disturbing... at LEAST!

Even before that, when your military adviser tells you the site you’ve picked will work, use it. Don’t change the landing site to one so bad your military adviser tries to quit in disgust before the debacle gets blamed on him.

Rule # 1. NEVER TRUST A DEMOCRAT TO BACK YOU UP!

Kennedy promised air cover, then when the anti-Castro forces needed it, refused to send it.

His people blamed it on the CIA tricking poor little Jack into saying go on the operation. Removing air cover was the best thing he could do to right the CIA “mistake”, donchya know. Pathetic.

When it comes to past history, I feel as if we live in the times of the Pharaoh who knew not Moses.
