Individual insurance plans up by 17 percent [WA]

[I know the title reads like premiums went up by 17% -- and they probably did for some people. See comment below]

Nearly 325,000 people have enrolled in individual insurance plans in Washington, marking the first time in four years that group has grown significantly, according to figures released Wednesday by the Office of the Insurance Commissioner.

The numbers, reported by health insurers as of March 31, represent an increase of almost 17 percent from the total before the launch of the state’s online insurance exchange under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The figures include 146,000 enrolled through the Washington Health Benefit Exchange‘s Healthplanfinder, and 178,891 enrolled outside the exchange. The enrollment total is expected to grow as the exchange processes late enrollments, with a final number to be released next week.

Really an awesome accomplishment....unless you factor in that the price of insurance doubled for some of us. I had $140/month $3500 deductible; now I pay $270 month and have a $5000 deductible. Thanks Obama!

My Daughter in Law, kept her maiden name and signed up for free. It looks like the guy above is paying for it.

The surname doesn’t have anything to do with it but I would be concerned about this. If your DIL did not accurately represent her marital status or household income she could be in big trouble — Washington State is verifying every single application over time. I had to respond to questions already.

You’d think the numbers would be a lot stronger since it’s FREAKING MANDATORY!

that 178,891 outside the exchange number looks a lot like the Medicaid numbers.........would like to know where that 178k is coming from. Not going to hold my breath.

One thing is certain, there are more new Medicaid enrollees in the state than exchange users.

My monthly premium rose from $1250 to $1375 “off exchange.” I have fewer options, similar deductible, and I lost my doctor.

Another little tidbit from the source article was that the insurance commissioner’s office predicted 30,000 new Medicaid enrollees under expanded guidelines. It was more than double that in the first month and there were 60,000 new enrollees under the old Medicaid guidelines. All this happened, but thiis blog is still using deceptively low predictions that are totally out of date.

You’re not factoring the fact many got their Basic Health & CHP plans cancelled 01/01/2014. Those subscribers went someplace...the subsidies are very generous if you are in the target group I’ve been told.

Thanks - ping any time.

I wonder how long we will have to wait to get valid information on how many uninsured applied?

And, considering the six month long multi-billion dollar enrollment blitz, a 17% increase in private enrollment sounds downright pathetic.

I just looked up the medicaid numbers. Since October the number of Medicaid enrollees under the old guidelines (that WA state has to pay for) is 134,000. That is roughly ten percent of the Medicaid population for the state. I'm sure the state will be able to handle an extra 10%.....

Those covered under the expanded Medicaid, paid for mostly by the federal government, is 270,000. All told that means Medicaid has gotten more enrollees than insurance programs, in and out of the exchange, combined.
