Carrying guns on the beach may be legal, but it's not civil: Guest opinion

Let us consider the stories of two Oregon Coast men who enjoy walking on the beach but go about it in dramatically different ways.

One man, Matt Love from Astoria, walks on the beach at least five times a week with his 15-year-old husky and has been known to build driftwood forts and plunge naked into the ocean. He just turned 50 and works as a writer, publisher and educator.

The other man, Dustin Harris from Lincoln City, walks down Highway 101 and across the beach open carrying a rifle, pistol and a permitted concealed weapon and causes multiple people to call 911 and report a potentially dangerous situation. He is 26, has two young children and works as an assistant manager of a restaurant.

Personally I’m for banning driftwood forts. They aren’t up to code, they weren’t built by bonded union labor, they send a message to children that the world is a hostile place where you need a fort for protection. Also they hurt my feelings.

“Driftwood forts” sounds so innocent. What they really are are hardened compounds. Send BATFE.

Does he hold them up at gunpoint and order them to commit the crime of making false 911 reports?

I'm curious how many times Mr. Harris has been stopped by police as a result of these 911 calls and whether he's getting tired of it by now.

What is your “driftwood fort” fortifying against??????

I wonder if he asked the EPA for permission to disturb the beach in such a callous manner.

MRAPs and flame-throwers. It’s for the children.

Frankly, I consider a naked 50 year old man at the beach far more of a threat to my safety and well being than any one ‘open carrying’

Other people’s feelings never matter to libtards, only theirs. If other people have feelings which disagree with their lifestyle choices, it is only because they are racist, homophobic, narrow minded, etc. and need to change. Didn’t you get the memo?

Aren’t they both open carrying? One a penis, the other an inanimate object?

I get the feeling he listens to Garrison Keillor:

A naked 50 year old man in a driftwood fort sounds like pedo bear.

Bottom line is the general public will need to get use to seeing people with guns, in some places it is not unusual at all, as long as some one is not carrying at the ready, it should not arouse suspicion.

It will take time.

He needs to be careful... although perfectly legal, if he rubs the wrong cop the wrong way, he could have a going armed in terror of public charge.

I’m curious about how often he’s been stopped, too. After reading the source article, he doesn’t seem like the type who gets tired of it, though. I’m even more curious about how the writer of the article knows about it....

Good point! Several folks have been killed because of this too over the past few years.

Personally, I think it’s a bit wreckless to OC. You put a big bulls-eye on yourself when you do and attract way too much unwanted attention.

We live in a country where cops panic and blow away a guy reaching for his cane. Or where a hothead in a movie theater shoots someone for texting. While Mr. Harris is within his rights to walk down the beach with his arsenal I fully expect that one day we'll open the paper and read about how a 20-something Oregon father of two died in a hail of gunfire and how the police chief is saying that his officers only followed procedure.

When you said “...rubs the wrong cop...” I thought you were talking about the nekkid guy. LOL!
