Maher: GOP Shouts About Ukraine, But They ‘Never Quite Say What Obama Should Do’
mediaite.com ^ | April 26, 2014 |  Josh Feldman

Posted on 04/26/2014 11:48:04 AM PDT by Tailgunner Joe

In the Overtime segment of his show, Bill Maher clashed with Daily Beast editor-in-chief John Avlon over Ukraine. Maher said the U.S. should respond to Russia shutting down talks “by not giving a shit” and mockingly continued, “I’m sorry, let’s go have World War III over Crimea.”

Avlon argued that just because America has a “foreign war hangover” it doesn’t mean the U.S. doesn’t have to care about what Vladimir Putin is doing. He called Putin a bully that will only stop “when someone stands up to him.”

Maher asked, then, what exactly President Obama‘s supposed to do, calling out Republicans for criticizing Obama every which way on Ukraine but “they never say quite what Obama should do.” He said, “If you’re not suggesting we should go to war or send troops, what are you saying?”

Avlon pointed to U.S. troop exercises in Poland as a start, and lamented how the international community lacks the ability to coalesce around Putin and stop him from trying to “reassert the borders of the USSR.”

“If you’re not suggesting we should go to war or send troops, what are you saying?”

1) Trim the welfare state.
2) Bring back American jobs.
3) Restore freedom and initiative to this country.
4) Stop weakening our military.

The day comes where we will need a strong people, strong economy, and a strong military.
Crimea isn't the battlefield ... and that's good. Because we're not ready. But we should be getting ready.

Good points. Regardless of what Russia does, there are many things we must do at home first.

His first move should be to resign and turn the reins over to somebody with a higher IQ, like Joe Biden! Or maybe a higher IQ, like “Bo, the dog”!

"But we should be getting ready"

For what?

Syria? Iran? China? Russia? Re-Invade Iraq?

You, McCain, and the NeoCons need to put together a list of priorities about who we will be going to war with.

What should Obama do?

He should go to the Ukraine, and challenge Putin to one on one fight to settle the issue.

As a very important source of strength and security, cherish public credit. One method of preserving it is, to use it as sparingly as possible; avoiding occasions of expense by cultivating peace, but remembering also that timely disbursements to prepare for danger frequently prevent much greater disbursements to repel it; avoiding likewise the accumulation of debt, not only by shunning occasions of expense, but by vigorous exertions in time of peace to discharge the debts, which unavoidable wars may have occasioned, not ungenerously throwing upon posterity the burthen, which we ourselves ought to bear.

He should release his documents,
admit he lied,
apologize on his knees, and then resign.

US should borrow more money from China and Japan and start a war in Ukraine. Why not? our Treasury is in the hock barely $17 Trillion. What’s a few more Trillions in debt?

But wait just a minute...every major power in history fell into the abyss with foreign military adventures with a bankrupt treasury. So what! Just ignore history!

Forward ho!!

I don’t want us to go to war with anyone.

And the best way to prevent that is to be strong. Are you opposed to American strength? I listed 4 concrete points. Do you oppose any of them? If not, why are you sniping at me?

Obama’s already acted. He destroyed our economy and our military strength and that is what emboldened Putin to make his moves. What should Obama do now to counter? Obvious. RESIGN!

Mayer’s correct. The DC GOP doesn’t do anything but pretend to be pro-Constitution and conservative to get elected. What we should do is stop the global meddling and worry about the US being on a very fast slippery slope into the trash heap of failed empires.

Maher: GOP Shouts About Ukraine, But They ‘Never Quite Say What Obama Should Do’

I actually agree with that unless you're talking about McCain, Linda, and William Krystol, and the crew at Weekly Standard.

They all want to attack....into the valley of death rode the 600.

Most of the conservative media harps on sanctions of one form or another. Sanctions are a joke unless it's some landlocked, enemy-surrounded state like Servia of Bosnian war fame. Thinking that sanctions will affect a nation the size and resources of Russia is simply for public consumption. It will affect nothing.

The most common alternate answers are to: (1) Arm the Ukraine or (2) Do nothing.

Uh, he’s the president. I didn’t know that it was the Republicans’ responsibility to hold his hand. He wouldn’t listen anyway.

Sanctions are a tool that crony capitalists use to shut out the competition as they get waivers.

He’s already done it.. that’s the problem.
Obama, the left and the media did not account for the consequences of his actions and non actions.

He’s weakened our military
He’s apologized to all our enemies
He’s infuriated our allies
He’s made the United States a joke to those who should fear us.
Everything he’s done is backwards/wrong.
He doesn’t have a clue.
And the media is as much to blame as the clueless obamatrain. He could not have done this without the cover of the media and the spineless congress.

A message to those who might come to their senses after all this time and after all the damage which has been wrought:
It didn’t have to be like this.. all of this could have been prevented if you had just used a little common sense.

...and another thing. Obama pressed for the disarmament of Ukraine in the first place. He pledged support if Russia invaded. He made this huge bed, and Maher is whining that he now has to sleep in it. Don’t write checks you can’t cash.

How about being a strong leader?

That pretty much covers it, Bill. Impossible though, because it would require erasing his entire ideology, after doing away with his toxic narcissism.
