Arrested for quoting Winston Churchill: (EU)

A candidate in the European elections was arrested on suspicion of racial harrassment after quoting a passage about Islam, written by Winston Churchill, during a campaign speech.

Paul Weston, chairman of the party Liberty GB, made the address on the steps of Winchester Guildhall, in Hampshire on Saturday.

A member of the public took offence at the quote, taken from Churchill's The River War and called police.

The passage from the book, written by the wartime Prime Minister and first published in 1899, focuses on Churchill's observations about Islam while serving during the Anglo-Egyptian reconquest of the Sudan.

Mr Weston told his audience: 'Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live.

'Thousands become the brave and loyal soldiers of the faith: all know how to die but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it.

'No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith.'

Police officers arrested Mr Weston, mid-speech, for failing to comply with their request to move on under the powers of a dispersal order made against him.

He was further arrested on suspicion of religious or racial harrassment.

This is exactly the kind of thing Winston was talking about.

I wonder if it was this quote:

Very succinct and accurate description.

Fairly accurate. No wonder it was considered over the top...

This is the passage in question. I don't know if he read the whole thing:
'How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries!,' wrote Churchill.

'Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy.

'The effects are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live.

'A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity.

'The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property – either as a child, a wife, or a concubine – must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men.

'Thousands become the brave and loyal soldiers of the faith: all know how to die but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it.

'No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith.'

A slightly more complete version:

“How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property – either as a child, a wife, or a concubine – must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men. Thousands become the brave and loyal soldiers of the faith: all know how to die but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science, the science against which it had vainly struggled, the civilisation of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilisation of ancient Rome.”

The River War is a good book, as it was written mostly on-site or from first-hand knowledge, as opposed to most crap in print about a political situation or war. Churchill was there and wasn’t censored as far as I know. The fact that I got that book and The History of the English Peoples volumes for less than shipping costs with a “DESTROY” stamp on the inside of each cover tells you all you need to know about the educational situation these days.

To be fair, your quote is not a quote, it’s a paraphrase, and so should not have quotation marks.

Actual quote: “How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy.”

IOW, he was saying that Islam is capable of inducing in some of its followers a fanatical frenzy, “which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog,.”

Winnie did NOT say that Islam itself is this dangerous, or that it always induces this condition, or that the same condition cannot also be induced by other factors.

His description is more balanced than that, and is not entirely unfavorable to Islam and Muslims.

Arrested... For SPEAKING.

F U GBR.

Churchill must be puking in his grave at what a bunch of worthless PC turds the British have become. Why don't the British just provide swords and chopping blocks to the mooselimbs, and lay their necks down for beheading...

For the information of those who are interested in reading this book, they should be aware that there are several versions out there. The later versions are greatly revised, abridged by up to 1/3, and in many cases the most interesting of his opinions about individuals and policies have been cut out, apparently for political reasons.

You want the 1899 two-volume version.

Thanks for the mention. Yes, it does seem to tell a story doesn’t it, the cost of the books and the stamp.

Churchill was an interesting man. Drinking to excess, the guy couldn’t get elected today. And yet, look at the rallying point he was.

His books probably provide too much information on manhood, morals, the right thing to do..., the evils of inferior political movements...

Before you curse the UK for falling into the PC trap that lefties and muhamedans built, perhaps you might also take a look within your own 50 (or is it 57?) states. As I recall, of all the major western countries, only one has a muhamedan as head of state.

Churchill is turning in his grave being quoted by Paul Weston. Weston was drummed out of UKIP. His views are a strange amalgam of racial purity, support for homosexual marriage and libertarianism. May he be ignored.
