The city council of Louisville has denied a request for funds to help Boy Scouts obtain merit badges, because the group allegedly discriminates by refusing to allow homosexual males to act as scoutmasters.
Louisville Metro Council rejected a request from Councilwoman Cindi Fowler, D-14th District, to approve $640 in neighborhood development money so that Boy Scouts could earn their swimming badges after the county attorney said the Boy Scouts of America's (BSA) ban on homosexual scout leaders violates the city's anti-discrimination ordinance.
The money would have expanded swimming opportunities an additional two hours on two nights for the scouts of Troop 51 at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, according to a Courier-Journal report.
"With the heightened talk, attorneys in the civil division believe that they [BSA] do discriminate and...it is intentional discrimination," said County Attorney Mike O'Connell's spokeswoman, Jessie Halladay.
As a result, Troop 51 assistant scoutmaster Mike Kuhn received a notice telling him that the funding for extra swimming time had been rejected because "the Boy Scouts organization cannot provide documentation of an employment policy that does not discriminate against individuals, specifically sexual orientation."
Kuhn told the Courier-Journal that he asked the council to reconsider the decision in light of its impact on the children, who should not be deprived of the scout swim nights because of the BSA's stand on homosexuals in leadership roles.
"Don't make the kids suffer over an interpretation of BSA policy that they have no control over," he wrote to the council.
Although the Supreme Court upheld the Boy Scouts' First Amendment right of association in not allowing homosexual scout leaders in its Boy Scouts of America v. Dale (2000) decision, the Boy Scouts of America's national governing changed policy to allow homosexual boys to become Scouts following a massive, sustained pressure campaign from homosexual activists.
Although the BSA voted to lift its long-standing ban on openly homosexual youth in the program, it continues to bar homosexual adults from membership. Critics predicted at the time the policy could not stand.
Walt Disney World has threatened to withhold funds from the Boy Scouts through a matching grant program unless it allows gay scoutmasters by 2015.
In response to County Attorney Mike O'Connell's decision, Councilor Fowler said she has already directed funds to expand swimming hours at the pool for the general public on Tuesdays during summer months, and that she encourages the scouts to take advantage of that expanded time.
... Michael Bowman, Fowler's legislative assistant, on Thursday emailed Mike Kuhn, assistant scoutmaster for Troop 51 at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, telling him that the funding had been rejected because "the Boy Scouts organization cannot provide documentation of an employment policy that does not discriminate against individuals, specifically sexual orientation." ...
... Though funding for the Boy Scouts had been approved in previous years, recent attention to the Boy Scout policy had prompted the county attorney's office to look more closely at the request, Halladay said. The Boy Scouts of America altered its policy this year to allow gay scouts, but it still prohibits gay scout leaders. "With the heightened talk, attorneys in the civil division believe that they do discriminate and it is intentional discrimination," Halladay said. ...
... Kuhn wrote an email Thursday to fellow scout leaders, Fowler and Councilmen David Yates and Rick Blackwell, asking that the council reconsider funding the scout swim nights. He also threatened that the scouts may rethink volunteering for local government projects, including Eagle Scout projects at Jefferson Memorial Forest and cleanups along the riverfront and as part of Brightside. "Maybe the unpaid labor provided by the scouts for the multitude of service given to the community on request of the local government should not be forthcoming," wrote Kuhn, who later told The Courier Journal he is tolerant but is concerned about the effect of the decision on children. ...
... The Metro United Way is evaluating whether to continue to direct $250,000 in annual funding to Louisville-area Boy Scouts, and the United Way of the Bluegrass has already withdrawn funding from the scout council in Lexington. ...
And so it goes, to no one's surprise. File this under "ammunition for future use" to force the BSA National Council to amend its membership rules to allow open adult homosexuals.
The pressure keeps piling ...
DoD Human Goals Charter
United Way chapters denying funds to local councils
Local school boards denying local councils to hold school recruiting nights and denying to provide rent-free meeting rooms to units (in essence, denying to be a charter organization)
Fortune 500 corporations denying contributions to BSA National, local councils, and local units
Sometime in APR was the deadline for members of the BSA National Council to submit their petitions/amendments to be considered before the National Council at the annual biz meeting to be held over 5/21-23/2014 at the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center in Nashville, TN. These recommendations will be handled behind closed doors and assigned to appropriate committees and most likely will not be openly discussed during the published agenda for the ~1.5 hour business meeting. Undoubtedly, someone has submitted the recommendation to accept openly homosexual adults.
Of course, new BSA National Council president-elect, former SoD Robert Gates, will be installed during this meeting for a 2-year tenure. If he doesn't push through open acceptance of open homosexual adults on his watch, then it will most assuredly happen on his successor's watch, Randall Stephenson, CEO of AT&T.
I wonder what legal majority voters / taxpayers in Louisville think about how this city ordinance is being applied.
well of course. They have to prove how liberal they are, by taking this so called courageous stand.
Liberals claim to take courageous stands in support of liberal causes. I heard somebody in Hollywood not long ago, who said he was fearful of the reaction because he decided to support same-sex marriage. Supporting same-sex marriage would be controversial in Hollywood??? Really???? How deluded are some of these liberals???????
The sodomization of the BSA....it started with just a little bit at first.....just to see how it feels.
The BSA tried to sell only half its soul to the devil.......how's that working out?
A lot of conservatives won't support them anymore because they sold out. The libs still won't support them because they didn't sell out enough.
Rand Paul: Time for GOP to soften war stance...by softening its edge on some volatile social issues and altering its image as the party always seemingly "eager to go to war... We do need to expand the party and grow the party and that does mean that we don't always all agree on every issue" ... the party needs to become more welcoming to individuals who disagree with basic Republican doctrine on emotional social issues such as gay marriage... "We're going to have to be a little hands off on some of these issues ... and get people into the party," Paul said.[Posted on 01/31/2013 5:08:50 PM PST by xzins]
If the BSA is in violation of the city ordinance, then the county attorney has an obligation to enforce the law — he/she/it should have someone arrested and/or fined. Let’s see how far these intolerant bullies are prepared to go to defend homosexual rights.
Louisville KY. I was born there 62 years ago. It was a dump then. It’s a dump now. This comes as no surprise.
Decent folks have shunned them. Now, the other side is shunning them, too.
This is what you get when you give in to the absurd immorality of the LBGT agenda.
Might as well change their name to the Queer Scouts of Amerika & be done with it.
I will never support the BSA or the GSA. They no longer exist as far as I’m concerned.
This is the perfect example where conservatives, patriots and veterans need to get up off their butts and show up at the Louisville village council meeting and read the riot act to these Nazis.
It’s amazing what 100 patriots can accomplish vs 7 leftist wimps. Overwhelm them, smear them and post their pictures on lampposts as scum traitors.
If you can’t do this simple thing today, tomorrow you may need to fight for your lives.
