In the mid 1980’s, politicians convinced the citizens in state after state that lotteries would supply the needed cash for their education systems. The voters couldn’t resist the campaigns that promised to improve the education of their children. As of today, 44 states are involved in some sort of lottery where a portion of the earnings are used specifically for the education of their children. Unfortunately, the expected jackpot never materialized for the purpose it was intended. Instead we learned that state after state has been caught using the funds for programs other than education. Even if all the money was used as allocated, it would fall substantially short of the promises made to the voters.

Politicians also made the promise that the children would be the big winners if the people just voted to legalize gambling in their states. So in state after state the voters either voted for initiatives or elected officials who passed...

Coming from a big family living in poverty, I know first hand how the poverty pimps will use others poverty and misfortune to advance their own political career.

Forty years later, I still have a couple of siblings living off the government. Even though I have always been able to do succeed while another brother owns a construction business he built from scratch, they cannot see the connection between our hard work and success.

Meanwhile those siblings are still barely subsisting on the government dole as they buy into every promise the leftist politicians sell them.

They are the ones who vote for Democrats, election after election with the hopes that the next big government program will make their child's life better than theirs was.

In Mississippi, they finally ended Prohibition in 1966 by saying all the alcohol funding would go towards "education". When they legalized the Casino, it was "for education". Any sales tax increase was "for the children".

If all the money Mississippi raised taxes for actually went "to the children", the kids would be driven to class in limos, have 9 5-* meals to choose from for lunch, and the teachers would have 6-figure salaries.

Yea, instead, the politicians, bureaucrats, teachers, school administrators, and Union Bosses are all riding those limos while the children are dumber than the children graduating in 3rd world countries.

Here in Jersey they said casino gambling was for ‘’education’’. When they set up the lottery, that was for ‘’education’’, The state income tax and the state sales tax were supposed to be for ‘’education’’. Education here is funded by property taxes. New Jersey is one of the few states that funds education through property taxes. All this tax on ‘’education’’ and it seems the longer kids stay in school here the dumber they get while the rest of us are going broke.

Here in NJ, they sold the people the same line of BS; while our teachers’ salaries are among the highest in the nation and we provide free breakfast, lunch, aftercare, etc. WE STILL HAVE THE HIGHEST SCHOOL TAXES IN THE COUNTRY. What a hoax...

Here in GA, our son went to college using a combination of the “Hope Scholarship” from lottery funds and a few other minor scholarships. It wasn’t an Ivy League school, but he kept the “B” average as was required and graduated with not one cent owed for student loans.

A/C was also suppose to fund the aged and the handicapped from Casino profits and never happened! Property taxes in this State are ridiculous a home like the one I live in, the tax per year is over 9k where the same house in my home state is about 900 dollars!
Government workers and Their Unions have obtained pensions of better that 200,000 per year. Retirement at 50. Many have second jobs in the same field they were working at state expense. Some had two jobs and have a pension upwards of 400,000. The Taxpayer cannot sustain this. Christie is trying to address it but the Dems carry on with present policy!

Incredible; it seems the aged are funding AC instead. Taxpayers (companies and the workers able to go with them) are fleeing the state in droves, and while Christie is trying I don’t see how he can stop it. He has capped the property tax increases that were swollen by our public sector, but the taxes are still so high private employers won;t stand for it with so many alternatives. Soon companies willing to weather the high taxes will be leaving because they can’t find qualified employees (as those that can, leave - and are replaced by Third World immigrants and unemployable gibsmedats); the future looks dark for the NYC metro area.

I don't recall any state saying that all of the money earned from the lottery would go to education.

We are also spending a lot more on education now than when state lotteries started, even accounting for inflation. Where has it gotten us? More "educrats" who come up with zero tolerance rules because they're too stupid to figure out how to deal with school problems (and they collect a healthy paycheck compared to the teachers). They're too busy trying to work Leftist propaganda into the curriculum.

How is it that we could pay for everything (schools, roads, etc.) with the low and fewer taxes of the '50s, but we can't with the higher and more taxes we have today?

Yeah my daughter is going to UGA on the "Hope Scholarship," on teh Zell Miller scholarship, which pays 97% of tuition.

I still have to pay over $12K a year for housing, meal plan and "student activity fees."

When I went to UGA in the late 80's I paid for it out of a bar manager's salary + tips. About $3500 a semester for everything except car expenses.
