Yes - see my post 49. But rushing to a “peace” that leaves the NVA still in South Vietnam isn’t much of a victory.

Nobody shot nobody for baring breasts.

The MSM taunted everybody until it exploded so they could get a story.

Thanks. Somehow my graduation year I missed that song and band. My type of music. It is an occupation media. That is the first target. Sleep well.

I do remember my grandmother and mother being horrified that the girls were lifting their skirts.

What horrifys me is that was a tactic to get the NG to look. while some ahole snipes him in the head with a rock.

It was AFU.

These “students” were not protesting the Vietnam war; they had firebombed the ROTC building, had doused trees in gasoline and caught them on fire, basically terrorized the town residence for weeks and, at the time of the shootings, were throwing bricks and other debris at guardsmen, chanting “kill! Kill! Kill!” The guardsmen were justified in their very restrained response.

Agree. I’ve never faulted the NG at Kent St. The rioters had been at it for days and then one of their instigators fired a weapon; the spark that caused the NG to fire in response. .....A few years ago, I saw a photo or something on TV that showed the initial shooter holding the handgun just before or after he fired the shot.

I have scoured history on the net about this charge that women protestors showed breasts and now according to you....their vaginas by lifting up their skirts

So the poor guardsmen could be distracted and hit with rocks easier....

The only link on google to such shenanigans is this free republic thread...this particular one....ever

There have been dozens of Kent State threads over the years...

But this is first I’ve heard of this..

If you have historical link please by all means share..

Very few hippie girls wore skirts to protests....they wore bell bottom jeans

I spent so much time at KSU in the 70s I should have a degree.

Nobody agrees on the timeline of events.

“But rushing to a “peace” that leaves the NVA still in South Vietnam isn’t much of a victory.”

Agreed, it was yet another case of the Democrats deserting the ongoing battle and fraudulently calling it peace. Likewise the Democrats fraudulently say America is starting a war by defending someone in a war already underway, and they say America is making peace when they desert the conflict while the aggressor continues on making war.

The school and government were more concerned about the non-student people who had moved into town, burned down the ROTC building, threw rocks and chopped the hoses of the firemen sent to put out it out. The attack on the guardsmen the next day had the desired result.

That's the crux of the thing. The agitators wanted someone to get shot, and did everything they could to facilitate it.

Anyway, that was my memory of the event.

Agree with your entire posting. No regrets here for the shootings.

I was 27 at the time in ‘70, finished my military obligation in ‘65, divorced, 6 yo daughter, working full time and going to night school. ....I NEVER understood the stupid college students protesting and rioting for communist ideals. Even in early ‘70s, I was going to a university full time and there were all the hippie/pot head/protester types there. Most were in late teens or early 20s. ....I felt like an old man among them because they were so childish and so easily swayed; yet, I had barely reached the age of 30.

I was 19, but I did not understand the rioting, either. I was in school because I was working and had earned a scholarship--it wasn't handed to me. Many of my peers were easily swayed; I was amazed by the magical thinking.

What annoys me now is that these same people got haircuts and nice suits and are now in positions of power, or have groomed true believers in their delusions to positions of power.

Romanticizing hippies and protest marches without understanding what a conformist group they were, or how destructive they were, is a mistake. You could size up the politics of the far left loons in 1970 just by looking at them, since their dress was so predictable and uniform. They thought they were "free-thinkers", but they were in lock-step with each other.

A mob is a very dangerous entity.

I witnessed a riot at a southern university during the Vietnam War era. The cops decided to drive about 20 cruisers through and angry crowd of 5000 peaceful students. About 20 violent radicals in the crowd kicked in the sides of the police cars. The police wisely drove on and did not stop to confront the vandals. This prevented bloodshed and maybe saved lives.

Even though I attended a very large university, I could tell there were non-students on campus, some of which were actively destroying property. I never found out who they were, or where they were from. I have a suspicion they may have been outside agitators (SDS?) or perhaps some mentally ill kids. They were using the crowd as cover for their illegal and violent actions.

BTW, the state highway patrol was much less professional in appearance and actions than today's troupers. They used the anarchy to dispense street justice, chasing students into dorms, and applying teargas into AC units.

Very fortunate no one was killed. Horrific waste of energy and disturbing disrespect of our institutions.
