Bordentown police chief shot by own gun fired by preteen, police say

One gunshot rattled nerves inside the Bordentown Township Municipal Building on Tuesday afternoon and sent people scrambling to help 57-year-old Police Chief Frank Nucera who was hit in the leg.

"I knew something big was going on if I'm seeing all these cop cars coming to the station rather than leaving the station," witness Deborah Nabosse said.

It was around 4:00 p.m. when investigators say the chief, who is also serving as town administrator in the small Jersey community, was inside the tax collector's office.

The Burlington County Prosecutor's Office says a child, described as a preteen, somehow got his hand on the chief's holstered service weapon and fired a shot.

The child's parent had business in the tax office.

"Someone was able to get a gun when they shouldn't have had it in the first place, now an accident happened because of it," Nabosse said.

Bordentown, NJ is, beleive it or not, exactly where the family of Napoleon Bonaparte settled in the US, so perhaps this kid who shot the chief in the leg was settling some old score from Corsica or France.

The mother should have kept a better eye on her kid. The kid could also have been stupid enough to stick a hand in an office paper shredder. Moms: the world is not your kids playground; don't inflict them on offices.

That said, the police chief clearly flunked his "weapon retention" training.

Most PDs require a level 3 retention holster. Apparently, the chief is a “cowboy” and doesn’t need one if some kid is able to grab hold of his gun that easily. Live and learn (in this case).
