Since faraday cages and emp's came up a few days ago on one of the threads, maybe this could be helpful. Of course having enough advance warning of an impending attack would be useful too. :>}

Get an old microwave and put susceptible items in it. Get several if necessary. The older ones are larger though..................

First you need to understand that EMP is more hype than fact in the “it is going to kill all your electronics". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inverse-square_law

Cell phones, transistor radios (solar or hand cranked), walkie-talkies, cb radios, sw radio, house landline phones, any thing that has semiconductors in it. Laptop or tablet, small TV, anything like that.............

also, get an OLD telephone, rotary dial if possible. You don’t have to put it in the safe place, and should the telephone lines still be working, it will too....................

Granted, the Inverse Square Law means that the EMP event must be relatively close to you so that your electronics would be the last thing you would have to worry about.......................

Telco “copper” today is usually “the last mile”, from there it is mostly digital; i.e., fried.

Except that I think the cell phone network and radio stations will be fried too.

The “last mile” is copper. After that it is fiber optic cable which is unaffected by EMP. Almost all field telco equipment is in metal boxes, effective shielding the electronics. It is the switching centers that are vulnerable to EMP.

Just be sure to make it big enough to protect all the infrastructure your digital toys need to do much more than serve as paperweights.

It just came to me as I was reading this thread. How will EMP’s affect these so called smart guns that the left appears to be pushing? In the event of a hostile invasion, such as Russia or China, EMP’s are going to be used in advance and during to shut down our comm and electrical grids.

Protecting your toaster, microwave and TV aren’t gonna help much when the entire electrical grid goes down........LOL!

I agree except for the faraday cage around my whole solar array. LOL! Yup, my toaster is okay but for some reason, my electric meter isn’t goin’ round and round. :>}

Presumably optical storage like CDs or DVDs would also be immune to EMP. I have long stored my important photo negatives and now copies of my digital photos in my bank safety deposit box to assure protection against fire or tornadoes and now EMP damage.
