GOP establishment strikes back in primaries

It was pretty much a rout for Tea Party/insurgents in yesterday’s primaries, as establishment-backed candidate for the North Carolina Senate nomination Thom Tillis easily exceeded the 40% threshold necessary to avoid a run-off, while incumbent House members John Boehner (OH), Renee Elmers (NC), Walter Jones (NC), David Joyce (OH), and Susan Brooks (IN) defeated challengers from the right. But before concluding that all is hopeless, consider a few aspects of the situation.

Have no fear. The GOP-e may yet snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

I guess human casualty rates are not high enough yet to make a difference.

If I lived in SW Ohio, in this one and only instance, I would vote for the Democrat in November.

The GOP is likely to keep a healthy margin in the House, no matter what happens.

Punishing Boehner and sending a chilling message to the GOPe is the most important thing we can do right now.

I am trying to decide between not voting for Cantor(VA 7) or actually voting against him. I am really considering it.

Isn’t there someone on a third party ticket? Voting for a democrat? Really??

Same here. If they totally ignore us (and they are close) the GOPe will be a greater disaster than any Dim could hope.

From the comments on this thread, I get the impression that you’re the only one who has indeed read the thing!

Well, I get blasted as "negative" or a "plant" when I have been warning people that this is LESS about the strength of the GOPe and more about the continued lethargy and weakness of the Tea Party. As a speaker to these groups, I have seen the decline for at least three years.

My take is that precisely because so many Tea Partiers were "first timers" and really novices---a wonderful thing for ideology---they tended to seriously let down ther guard and more important, failed to BUILD the movement after 2010. Many expected that the new House members and senators would carry the ball. Some did, some (Rubio) defected, some hsve been squishy.

But here's the bad news: Tea Party groups either became angry and dropped out or lost patience. Politics is a marathon, not a sprint. The Left gets it..

I noted in my talks that Tea Party attendance began falling steadily. One Dayton chairman told me his group was nearly defunct, and that the ONLY issue that drew a crowd all year was Common Core. But it's the same wherever I travel. Chapters that existed two years ago are gone---Fargo, ND for example. Part of any revival that can take place has to be an understanding of the slow and incremental nature of American politics.

Not voting for the Democrat so much as voting to fire Boehner. Voting third-party will just toss your vote into the “other” column. Sending him packing is the main goal.

One thing to remember about last night’s races, disappointing as some of them were, is that the Tea Party candidates were largely unknowns and campaigned on a small fraction of the funding available to their GOP establishment counterparts. Also, these candidates really didn’t have the benefit of receiving high profile endorsements (other than South Carolina Senate hopeful Greg Brannon’s endorsement from Rand Paul, which I think may have come a bit too late in the game).

I think the most important upcoming races to watch are the ones involving Tea Party candidates backed by the Senate Conservatives Fund (i.e. - Bevin, KY; Sasse, NE; Maness - LA; Wolf - KS; Shannon - OK; McDaniel - MS; Ernst - IA, etc.). These candidates are receiving a lot more national attention and therefore bringing in some substantial outside campaign donations. And I don’t care what the media or the pundits say... I think Lindsey Graham could be in for a dog fight in his South Carolina primary race as he is currently polling just below the 50% vote threshold needed to avoid a runoff. I would LOVE to see SC cut the cord with this RINO turd and nominate a true conservative replacement!

Yeah, more votes for Democrats would lead Republicans to believe they need to keep moving left to gain votes.

I won’t vote for Cornyn, so it’ll either be third party or left blank.

The Ruling Class Establishment GOP made it abundantly and crystal clear: they were going to “crush” Tea Party Conservatives wherever they found them. The TEA Party Conservative movement was infiltrated by Ruling Class operatives and torn apart from within and buried in an avalanche of Establishment -funded demonization.

Conservatives are IDIOTS if they think they are going to be able to forward our agenda and maintain the Constitution and the Republic from within the GOP.

We are become wholly Soviet in our politics in this country. We have a single party Ruling Class running the country fostering the illusion of choice while making Conservatism IRRELEVANT in political discourse.

If you do not understand this - you have no clue what time it is in this country.

part of any revival that can take place has to do with the slow and incremental nature of American politics

It also has to do with there being candidates who have a complete vision of what the US should be, has the instincts to react in fast-moving national and global events, and can inspire as he/she articulates a vision.

Rand Paul did that with the drone issue and his popularity soared. Ted Cruz did that for a lot of people (in spite of media and RINO hype) with his magnificent 21 hours. Rubio could've done it, I think, if he hadn't been taken down by Schummer.

Nobody either party is out there connecting low wages and unemployment with the invasion of the US. Nobody either party is expressing the disgust of most US citizens about supporting terrorists, destabilizing governments, and being involved in parts of the world we don't belong. Nobody cares about decent hard-working older citizens who are being destroyed by 0% interest on bank savings. Nobody was quick enough to seize on Bundy as an imprefect person perhaps but a real rallying point for how the federal govenrment has taken over our lives. Did anybody have the guts to actively and vocally condemn all the damage McCain has done, at home and abroad?

The RINOs will win because we don't need positions, we need a vision to save the US. I think it's something in a candidate you might have to find, by their actions and leadership, instead of them finding you.

So let me get this straight

There were many people out there who said to themselves, “John Boehner is doing such a wonderful job as speaker and as my representative that I am going to make sure I take time out of my day to go vote for him”

Seriously?? Who the F*#@ are these morons that went out and voted for this guy (and the those other bastards)???????

In a sane society none of them would have gotten over 5% of the vote

I am sorry, America is just too stupid to live.

Good luck with that one. Ohio's 8th district last elected a Democrat in 1936 and has a Cook PVI of R +14.

Plus it is more west central than southwest.

I stand corrected. Ohio's 8th district is more southwest than south central.

Look what else I found! Bonehead, himself, first got elected to congress by beating a disgraced GOP congressman in a primary. The turd bird Buz Lukens was so addicted to power, he wouldn't resign even when caught on camera.
