California Mileage Tax Would Charge Drivers Based on Distance Driven

Sick of the gas tax?

What about a tax on every mile you drive?

A new bill going through Sacramento would tax drivers for every mile they are on the road.

The state gasoline tax of 52.9 cents per gallon could be replaced with a "miles driven fee" of $0.05 cents or so per mile driven, under state legislation proposed by a Bay Area lawmaker.

State transit officials note that there's not nearly enough money available to fix the many bridges and roads in California that are in desperate need of repair.

A federal highway fund, based on taxes on fuel, is expected to run dry this summer.

“We've got to figure out how to pay for infrastructure,” state Sen. Mark DeSaulnier (D-Concord) said. “One philosophy is, if you use it, you should pay for it.”

Under SB 1077, introduced by DeSaulnier, a still-to-be-determined California city would begin taxing motorists in January 2016. The longer your commute, the more you would pay.

That may yet be a tough sell, but a $0.05 per mile fee could raise over $100 billion for roads in some parts of the state, the San Gabriel Valley Tribune reported.

You will be charged by California if you are a resident there for all the mileage you have driven.

IF you are retired & drive to visit others around the country, California will collect that tax per mile on top of the state gas taxes you paid in all the states you visited.

Seems like double jeopardy to me.

Every road and every street, every alley etc. will be made into a “toll road”.

This is a test. There will come a day, probably hot far away, where everyone will have to justify their weekly mileage.

There are "thieves" and there are "horse thieves". These are the latter.

Didn't people in this country at one time hang "horse thieves" for a good reason?

People exhale MORE CO2 when they walk/jog/run. Expect the RFID chip they inject into people to have a GPS transponder to track you so they can track your CO2 output via walking/jogging/running...

The pilot programs I have seen have not charged for out of state miles as long as it was documented, such as with a GPS device.

They have also repaid any fuel taxes paid during the pilot programs.

Only the mileage tax was charged, and only in-state miles were counted.

I’ve done a lot of math and it seems like a mileage tax benefits gas guzzlers. If you get 15mpg, you would pay more for a fuel tax than for a mileage tax. If you get 30mpg, you would pay less with the fuel tax, and more with the mileage tax.

No, what they will do is go ahead and pass the per mile tax
after it becomes law, they will come with endless excuses as
to why the per gallon tax can’t be eliminated at this time.

At least it will now not matter what type of gas guzzler we drive.

I am confused.

Gas purchased is used for driving, almost exclusively. Ok, someone will point out that sometimes gas purchased will be used for mowing the lawn, or whatever, but I would bet that the great majority of gas used is for driving. So, why not just tax the gas purchased? What a concept. As a matter of fact, they do this already, “The state gasoline tax of 52.9 cents per gallon”.

I must be missing something.

I am guessing that they wont actually repeal the state gas tax, but they will just add another tax onto the state gas tax.

I was talking to a liberal about this:

Lib: They will tax you for mileage instead of gas.
Me: So they are getting rid of the gas tax?
Lib: Not immediately. Eventually.
Me: The Democrats are getting rid of a tax.
Lib: If they raise enough revenue with the mileage.
Me: Enough?
Lib: Even if they don’t, it will reduce Global Climate Change.
Me: And have a bigger impact on the poor.
Lib: They will be exempt.
Me: What about Global Climate Change? Do their cars not contribute to it?
Lib: I give up.
